The project is seeking an intern focused on computer vision applied to social human-robot interaction. The role of the intern is to prototype enabling vision modules, which have the potential to be deployed in a real consumer product. The intern has the opportunity to develop practical technical skills in computer vision, apply those skills within the context of a real robotics application, and creatively explore possibilities for computer vision applied to interaction design.

Job Responsibilities

  • Develop algorithms for real-time vision of people and objects

  • Evaluate open-source implementations of vision modules

  • Optimize algorithms for real-time performance on embedded systems

  • Prototype demos that apply perception technology to social HRI

  • Integrate and evaluate new types of sensors

  • Run experiments to measure vision algorithm performance

  • Write documentation and tests for code

  • Work independently and in a self-directed manner on software implementation

Requirements for position:

  • Currently enrolled in an MS or PhD program in Artificial Intelligence, Computer Science, Robotics, or related field

  • 2+ years developing computer vision systems

  • Experience with vision applied to control of real-time robotics systems, especially interactive systems

  • Experience with real-time detection, recognition, or tracking of humans

  • Experience with model-based and learning-based approaches to object recognition

  • Experience with depth (RGBD, stereo) sensors and sensor calibration

  • Experience designing data collection and annotation pipelines

  • Experience developing vision algorithms on embedded systems

  • Experience programming vision algorithms in C++ and Python

  • Experience with standard DNN frameworks such as Caffe and TensorFlow

  • Work authorization in the US

About the role: Cruise is looking for someone to own the production management of ground truth training datasets in support of autonomous vehicle technology. In this position, you will work with a large geographically distributed team and collaborate with engineering and product orgs to efficiently produce high-quality data for computer vision applications. Experience with autonomous vehicles and machine-learning is not required, but intuitive, problem-solving, advanced SQL and the ability to work with diverse stakeholders - both technical and non-technical - is a must.
