The Interim Writing Center Director leads the work of the Writing Center by designing, implementing, and overseeing the operation of the Middlebury College Writing Center. This role works collaboratively with colleagues in the Center for Teaching, Learning, & Research (CTLR) and the Writing and Rhetoric Program to build and support a vibrant culture of writing and writing instruction at the College.

This is a part time, benefits eligible, hourly position with a hiring range of $31,27 - $39.10 per year. It is a two year term position that is 20 hours per week.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Manage all aspects of the student tutor program in writing, from recruiting and hiring peer writing tutors, to developing and implementing initial training sessions and in-semester tutor development.

  • Cooperate with students and faculty to assess their needs in relation to teaching and learning writing and shape Writing Center programming/tutoring session formats accordingly. These formats may include: one-on-one tutoring by appointment, drop-in tutoring, and course-embedded tutoring, as well as synchronous and asynchronous online tutoring, where needed.

  • Use existing administrative software to evaluate data on tutor usage and events sponsored by the Writing Center. This process includes analyzing user statistics generated by appointment software to contribute to broader Center-wide conversations about the efficacy of Writing Center programming and future planning.

  • Administer the writing self-placement survey, an assessment tool for incoming first-year students in advance of Fall and Spring semesters.

  • Contribute to the short-term and long-term planning discussions of the CTLR and WRPR by sharing insights gained from Writing Center data and from direct engagement with peer writing tutors and students requesting writing support.

  • Monitors and manages related budget and tutor expenses.
