Position Summary
The Graduate Intern/Practicum Student will provide support, leadership, and guidance in Office programs, initiatives, and services directly related to the Office's mission and vision. The Graduate Intern/ Practicum Student will assist in the continued enhancement of a campus culture of respect and inclusion.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The internship/practicum is designed to provide the learner with experience and knowledge in social justice, diversity, and inclusion. Under the supervision of the Director or Assistant Directors of Intercultural Affairs, students will develop skills and competence in these areas as well as learn more about the Stonehill College community. Attention will be placed on the student's development and application of classroom learning in practice.
Goals:
Develop knowledge in social justice, diversity, and inclusion.
Develop skills in administration, advising, and programming.
Develop skills in critical thinking and problem-solving.
Develop skills for facilitating conversations on social power and privilege.
We seek a Graduate Intern/Practicum Student who can commit 8+ hours a week. Ideal candidates will commit to one year; however, we will consider candidates who are available for one semester only. We will also consider candidates who wish to complete an internship for the summer months (May-August).
We intend to hire 1 Graduate Intern/Practicum Student.
Below is a list of potential responsibilities. Assigned duties are flexible and based on student interest, competencies, and desired outcomes for practicum/internship.
Coordinating, promoting, and executing heritage awareness programs:
Collaborate with student organizations, faculty, and departments across the college to offer programs that further the understanding of a diversity of cultures and experiences.
For summer intern applicants: Coordinate and co-deliver diversity-focused sessions during the Summer Orientation program (2 sessions during June).
Provide support to organize, facilitate, and implement Office initiatives and services. Specifically working with the:
Advocates for a Brighter Stonehill Leadership Program
Book Club Discussion
Intercultural Experience Program I, II
IGNITE Lunch and Learn Series
DiverCity Festival
Safe Zone Series
Website Development/Social Media/Marketing
Advising and assisting student organizations/groups:
Provide resources and guidance to Identity-based Dialogue Groups and their Student Coordinators (ex: RISE, MOSAIC, GenOne).
Provide general program advisement, program support, and program evaluation for activities that promote diversity and inclusion.
Coach student leaders in leadership development.
Enhance historically marginalized student support and resources.
Develop new resources for academic, social, emotional, and cultural development.
Support retention programming initiatives such as peer mentor programs, orientation, celebratory graduations, etc.
Serve as an advocate and resource for historically marginalized students regarding issues of transition, as well as academic, social, cultural, and personal matters.
Support innovation of current offerings and development of new initiatives through research, data tracking, and assessment.
Education and/or Experience
Education: A Bachelor's Degree with experience or interest in working with multicultural populations and/or diversity programs. Currently enrolled in a Master's Program in Higher Education, Student Affairs, Counseling, Education, Social Work, or related fields.
Experience: Familiarity with event planning/programming, interest in diversity/multicultural education, knowledge of PCs and software programs such as Outlook and Microsoft Office. Also, the successful candidate must be dependable and have excellent interpersonal communication (written, oral, and electronic) skills. Candidate must demonstrate integrity, initiative, openness, teamwork, and a positive attitude.
Some evening and weekend work may be required.
Preferred Qualifications Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Outstanding oral and written communication skills are necessary.
Demonstrated commitment to embracing and advancing diversity and inclusion in all aspects of campus life is necessary.
Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet.
Work Environment
While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to sit. The employee is occasionally required to walk and use hands to handle and feel. Some evening and weekend work may be required.
