Instrument Tech- Certified Lead

UnityPoint Health- Allen- Sterile Processing

Shift: Full-time; 1500-2330 M-F

Under general supervision of the Sterile Processing leader, the Instrument Technician Certified Lead is responsible for coordination of day-to-day operations of the daily activities of the unit including overseeing the decontamination, assembly and sterilization process of all instruments, inventory of supplies, training of new staff members, and assisting with the coordination of maintenance and service of equipment as needed. Lead techs must demonstrate mastery of the Sterile Processing Technician role.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains appropriate staffing levels and effectively communicates with others to ensure staffing requirements are met.
  • Responsible for making daily staff assignments for assigned shift.
  • Reports broken equipment, instruments, and patient safety issues to the management team immediately.
  • Implements the repair process of equipment as necessary with proper notification to management.
  • Evaluates the out of service instruments appropriately and communicates appropriately to the SPD and OR Management.
  • Assist with establishing and overseeing the coordination of instrument turnovers required for surgical cases.
  • Is fully trained in all operational aspects of SPD and capable of assisting in the department as needed.
  • Performs audits of sterilizer and quality assurance documentation.
  • Inventories materials and supplies as needed to ensure adequate quantities are available for operations.
  • Collaborates with Leadership, effectively resolving complex situations, involving team members, providers, vendors, students, and visitors.
  • Utilizes excellent communication skills.
  • Collaborates with out lying clinics to provide sterile processing services and workflow support as directed by SPD leader.
  • May be asked to assume the responsibilities of the SPD leader during their absence.
  • Sorting and arranging soiled surgical instruments and equipment for proper cleaning procedures.
  • Performing cleaning and washing procedures to remove gross soil from surgical instruments and equipment for safe handling.
  • Detailed cleaning of complex instruments and equipment.
  • Following proper cleaning procedures for a wide variety of instruments and equipment.
  • Inspect surgical instruments and equipment for cleanliness and any broken pieces.
  • Test the functionality of surgical instruments and equipment to ensure they are in proper working condition.
  • Assemble surgical instrument sets accurately and according to department procedures
  • Sterilize surgical instruments via multiple methods that include and are not limited to steam and vaporized hydrogen peroxide.
  • Ensure items are sterilized according to proper procedure and guidelines as outlined in facility policy, AAMI/ANSI, and other accredited organizations.
  • Ensure items are sorted and distributed to proper storage locations for future use.
  • Serves as a subject matter expert for other team members in SPD and other hospital departments
  • Demonstrates in depth of knowledge and assists in maintaining the policies and procedures for Sterile Processing Department.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of routine testing and necessary documentation to be performed on SPD equipment and instrumentation.
  • Troubleshoots processes and machines.
  • Ability to establish priorities and demonstrate work flexibility to meet customer service demands.
  • Coordinates or assists with staff orientation/education/in-services/specialty skill training programs including competencies as assigned by Leadership.
  • Supervises or leads projects by readily accepting and adapting to change.
  • Performs routine quality audits of instrument sets and individually packaged instruments.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school graduate or equivalent
  • CRCST or CSPDT required or obtained within 1 year of hire.
  • Advanced knowledge of field, in-depth knowledge of the "why's".
  • Ability to maintain current professional expertise.
  • Promotes positive interpersonal relationships and serves as a role model within the department and with hospital personnel.
  • Writes, reads, comprehends, and speaks fluent English.
  • Multicultural sensitivity.
  • Writes, reads, comprehends, and speaks fluent English.
  • Basic computer knowledge using word processing, spreadsheet, email, and web browser.

Preferred:

  • 2+ year SPD experience preferred. Leadership or supervisory experience highly preferred.
