Brigham Young University's Central Heating Plant operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days per year. Residing within the Central Heating Plant, our co-generation facility produces both electricity and High Temperature Hot Water (HTHW is 400°F @ 300PSI). HTHW is distributed throughout campus via a closed loop system to provide buildings with heat, domestic hot water, and steam. For locations where our HTHW cannot reach, we operate and maintain an additional 60 auxiliary boilers. In addition to heat and electricity, the Central Heating Plant also provides water treatment for campus heating and cooling systems and ensures the water quality of our swimming pools, therapy pools, and spas.
Instrumentation and Control Technician
An Instrument and Control Technician is one of our most valued positions in the Central Heating Plant. Their day is never boring as they work in many areas across campus helping to maintain the safe, efficient, and uninterrupted operation of the Central Heating Plant and auxiliary heating systems through the management of instrumentation and control systems. This includes the installation, maintenance, diagnosing and repair of industrial sensors, controllers, and other automation components. Additionally, a technician is involved in the developing and modifying of software sequences and graphical user interfaces for the various heating equipment.
What you'll do in this position:
Perform scheduled calibration, testing, and troubleshooting of plant controls, temperature transmitters, pressure transmitters, BTU flow meters, auxiliary plant instruments and equipment.
Assist in the engineering, layout, installation, programming, calibration, preventive maintenance, troubleshooting and repair of campus BTU flow metering.
Interrogate control system logic and programming for monitoring and troubleshooting purposes. Analyze equipment performance. Modify settings and programming to improve operation and performance.
Correct and up-date schematics, drawings, and sequence changes made to the operation of auxiliary boilers and heat exchangers and download these updates for archival storage.
Engineer, install, and rewire controls and flame safeguard systems when upgrades are needed or required to maintain the safe and efficient operation of the auxiliary boilers or heat exchangers.
Train & mentor students to ensure that skills and abilities are developed in order to perform routine work.
Assist others in troubleshooting and repair work.
Be an independent worker, without the need for constant supervision and be able to make decisions alone.
Have the ability to maintain a good working relationship with all involved personnel, including the treatment of others with respect and kindness. Be able to communicate effectively. Have good organization skills.
What qualifies you for this role:

Preferred
Have experience troubleshooting and calibrating controls for hot water boilers, steam boilers, and heat exchangers.
Five (5) years of Industrial Controls experience and three (3) years of work experience in the Heating Plant Instrumentation group working with High Temperature Hot Water generation and maintenance.

Working from a ladder or platform to test, repair or install sensors or monitoring equipment. Working in hot environments (high temp hot water areas). Working in tunnels (high temp, sealed asbestos insulation, tight area).
