Instrument and Electrical Project Construction Lead

Job Summary:

The Marathon Petroleum Corporation has an Instrument and Electrical Project Construction Lead position open at our Los Angeles (Wilmington/Carson) Refinery. This position will be responsible for supporting the MPC project construction organization providing a point of contact between field activities and project engineering. This role will coordinate between MPC engineering, construction contractors, and operations. We are seeking a motivated, team oriented individual to drive and monitor construction work quality, efficiency, and help eliminate obstacles that are impeding construction work progress. This role will report to the LAR Maintenance Department Major Project Construction Supervisor with accountability to support the LAR Major Projects Group. The hours of the position are 4/10 - Monday

  • 6:00 AM - 4:30 PM. This position might support TAR once a year and will work occasional over-time as required.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Interact daily with MPC construction planners, schedulers, operations, and construction contractors to progress project construction activities.

  • Provide field construction support serving as a liaison between project engineers, operations, and construction contractors for refinery capital and expense projects.

  • Provide Quality Assurance of contractor Primavera P6 plans prior to incorporating in a master construction schedule.

  • Provide guidance to engineering on project constructability and execution strategy

  • Participate in project model reviews providing constructability input to engineering design.

  • Assist project engineering in the coordination of work package splits between TAR and Non-TAR Construction.

  • Assists team in resolution to RFI's during planning and execution

  • Work with operations to develop and incorporate equipment outage schedules as it pertains to project scope.

  • Review construction work packages, coordinate field walks with contract planners to validate man hour estimates align with work scope.

  • Assist with work package turnover strategy and support system turnover process.

  • Be familiar with and know how to find MPC Specifications and Standards related to construction.

  • Work with construction project controls to evaluate engineering estimates compared to construction control estimates.

  • Coordinate with outside specialty contractors to review job scope, bid proposals and assist construction activities.

  • Interact daily with Construction Coordinators, Project Controls, Planners, Schedulers, Project Managers, and construction contractors to progress construction planning and execution activities.

  • Manages Area work package assignments.

  • Support turnarounds with large project construction scope.

  • Provide accurate validation of weekly updates for all active projects in the implementation phase.

  • Actively review and manage weekly reports for Indirect/Direct Ratios, Productivity Factors (pf), hours earned versus hours burned for each project.

  • Actively manage, validate, and approve CSMs, RERs, FCOs, RFIs, and P6 schedules.

  • Demonstrate MPC's Personal Safety, Process Safety and Environmental Stewardship philosophies during planning and execution of project construction activities.

  • Participate in job site safety audits for compliance to MPC life critical safety rules and site Safe Work Permitting policies.

Education, Experience and Skills

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must have a High School Diploma or GED. (Education must be obtained before start date.)

  • Must have 5 years of experience working in projects or construction in a refinery, petro-chemical or other heavy industry.

  • Must have at least 5 year of Instrument and/or Electrical experience.

  • Must be competent in P&IDs, Loop Drawings, PFDs, Single Lines, etc.

  • Must be proficient with Microsoft: Excel, Word, and Outlook.

  • Must have excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

  • Must be able to wear appropriate PPE in the refinery (respirator), be able to physically perform all tasks in the field and take hair drug test and physical.

  • Must have a valid driver's license. (MPC determines valid status.)

  • Must be able to obtain a TWIC Card in future.

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the US without the need for future VISA sponsorship.

  • Travel Requirement is 5% or less.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous leadership skills are preferred.

  • Primavera

  • P6 experience is preferred.
  • Experience planning and/or coordinating large, complex projects in a refinery setting is preferred.
