Department Overview

The purpose of this position is to provide clinical patient care and clinical research-related patient care in accordance with allied health privileges granted by OHSU. Research-related activities are conducted in accordance with all federal, state and institutional requirements.

The research-related activities include screening of new patients who are candidates for protocols, medically managing them while on a protocol and providing their follow-up care. This medical management includes assessment of acute and non-acute clinical problems and toxicities, taking histories and physical examinations, ordering and interpreting data obtained from diagnostic tests and laboratory studies, ordering the appropriate medications and treatments, and providing patient and staff education. Research-related activities also include administrative duties including support of appropriate study selection, reporting requirements and study development.

The advanced practice provider functions in a manner which maintains the confidentiality and privacy of each patient, promotes a positive relationship with all health team members and supports the policies and procedures of the University Hospitals and Clinics.

Function/Duties of Position

This advanced practice provider position provides care to patients primarily in the outpatient setting but may include inpatient care and consultation as well. The clinic generally conducts patient care visits 2-3 days per week with additional inpatient care, procedural care, and research and clinical care coordination activities through the week. The Cardiology service provides age appropriate care to age groups indicated.

Scope of range within unit population: Adolescent through geriatric cardiology patients.

FUNCTIONS/DUTIES

Standard 1: Develops, interprets, implements and documents a plan of care for each patient and safely delivers this care.A.

Formulates plan of care obtaining any additional lab tests or studies, arranging return visits, providing appropriate patient education or referrals/consults for newly identified problemsv. Arranges support services as needed in conjunction with discharge services and social work departments.vi.

Participates in care conferences and discharge planning conferencesvii. Collects, prepares and submits data for review in accordance with collaborative study groups and international data registries.b. Emergent Situationsi.

Contacts Cardiology attending or fellow to discuss emergent situations and plans ii. Recognizes unusual or untoward reactions to interventions, treatments or related to their condition and contacts attending physicianc. Patient Educationi.

Provides education for patients about their disease, treatment and potential complications ii. Discusses risks/benefits when prescribing medications or treatments/ interventions.d. Patient Rightsi.

Provides patient care based on the "Patient Bill of Rights" ii. Respects patient diversity in beliefs and health care concerns iii. Assists patient in problem solving health care concernse.

Documentation of Practicei. Records all patient visits including lab results, medication changes, current plan of care, return visits and new problems in the inpatient or outpatient charts. ii. Required Qualifications

Nurse Practitioner:

  • Current Nurse Practitioner license for the state of Oregon

  • State of Oregon Nurse Practitioner Prescriptive Privileges

  • ACNP or AGACNP required for inpatient services

  • ACLS and BLS certification

Physician Assistant:

  • Current & Active Physician Assistant license for State of Oregon
  • DEA certificate
  • ACLS and BLS certification

Note: A completed practice agreement is required, post-offer/pre-hire.

Experience:

  • 2 years prior experience as an APP

  • Experience working with cardiology patients

  • Experience working with patients/participants in clinical research/trials is preferred

  • Experience in an academic medical center

  • Membership in a professional organization
