The Veterinary Technician Instructor will provide effective and engaging instruction in Veterinary Technician and other qualifying disciplines in the Science Department. Course assignments will depend on credentials per the Iowa Community Colleges Guideline for Faculty Qualifications. This position may include teaching via Triton Live network, teaching virtually, and/or traveling to area high schools, academies, and other Centers to teach college courses. The individual will complete required professional development, maintain licensure, and participate in cross-department work and committees. Commitment to annual reporting, assessment, and the strategic plan is required. Currency in the field as well as local and regional employer partnerships and exposure are critical expectations. Maintaining and expanding program articulations with transfer institutions is expected and conducting NACEP visits and documentation is required. The instructor will ensure all policies and procedures of CVTE Accreditation is followed. 

The Veterinarian Program Instructor must possess the knowledge, DVM skills, and expertise to teach and supervise students in laboratory, clinical, classroom, and internship settings. Candidates must exhibit a positive attitude towards students and serve as a patient advocate and veterinary community member. Ability to demonstrate knowledge in a matter sufficient to conduct curriculum as well as develop teaching materials, clinical assessments and activities. This position will be responsible for duties performed as a veterinarian such as performing surgeries, collaborative patient care, wellness and illness care, and utilizing technician students to the full scope of a veterinary technician license capabilities.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/STANDARDS OF PERFORMANCE

Instructional

  • Effectively organizes and teaches course work in accordance with established and/or developed syllabi.
  • Demonstrates current knowledge of the subject matter being taught by presentations, activities, questions, and responses relevant to the course syllabus.
  • Uses class time to encourage active student involvement in the learning process.
  • Assesses the overall student learning in the class by using multiple classroom assessment techniques, documents the assessment, and uses the assessment data for instructional improvement.
  • Monitors and provides frequent and specific feedback to students regarding the attainment of the learning outcomes and their progress in the course.
  • Consistently displays evidence of organization and planning, including materials being available and the instructional sequence progressing logically.
  • Uses a variety of materials and resources which enhance the teaching of the course objectives.
  • Make use of a variety of teaching techniques and technologies appropriate for the course taught.
  • Develops and utilizes teaching strategies based upon current research.

Student Rapport

  • Treats all students with respect and modifies instruction to meet their academic needs.
  • Communicates with students in a positive, impartial manner.
  • Exercises good judgement in dealing with classroom problems and assumes responsibility for those actions.
  • Maintains confidentiality of student information.

Professional Development

  • Annually engages in professional development activities and seeks information about academic trends and ideas relating to teaching. 

Department Related

  • Contributes to the achievements of department mission, goals/objectives, and responsibilities.
  • Develops and/or updates courses and course guides as assigned by the Dean.
  • Prepares, distributes, and submits first day handouts for all sections assigned to the faculty member in accordance with Department and College policies.
  • Encourages regular attendance and retention of students, including personally contacting students following absences to offer assistance and concern for their welfare.
  • Meets scheduled classes in accordance with College policy, beginning and ending class sessions according to published schedules. 
  • Maintains scheduled office hours to ensure accessibility to students and colleagues.
  • Maintains adequate and accurate records on class attendance and student grades. These records are submitted by the faculty member according to College policy and established deadlines.
  • Participates in student recruitment.
  • Participates in professional activities which enhance the interaction with adjunct instructors.
  • Requests in written form instructional equipment and supplies for the classroom/laboratory use. 

College Related

  • Openly supports and promotes the vision/mission of the College and works to achieve the vision/mission of the College.
  • Exercises stewardship of College facilities, equipment, and materials, including properly using College facilities, equipment, and materials, reporting needed repairs, and supervising students regarding use of facilities and equipment.
  • Demonstrates good rapport with patrons and community members. Good public relations are evident. 
  • Is professional in interacting with students, staff, and members of the communities served by the College.
  • Demonstrates a determined effort to maintain a good relationship with all other employees of the College.
  • Communicates consistently with students and staff using means established by the College, including email and voicemail.
  • Supports College sponsored activities and events.
  • Attends meetings as required by the College.
  • Credentialed veterinary technician who is a graduate of an AVMA CVTEA-accredited program. A licensed veterinarian may be considered if one is not already on staff.
  • Three years or more of industry experience is preferred. 
  • Teaching or training experience is preferred. 

GENERAL PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES WITH OR WITHOUT A REASONABLE ACCOMMODATION:

The position involves sitting, standing, and walking in the classroom during the class sessions.

Constant (67-100%): Talking, listening, and observing student activities within the classroom and in work-based learning opportunities. Reaching, standing, lifting, dexterity, grasping, viewing, and repetitive motions. Carrying classroom materials weighing up to 50 pounds between classrooms and labs.

Frequent (34-66%): Writing on board or overhead; using instructional aids such as manipulatives, calculators, and computers; walking between buildings under icy, wet, or cold conditions to get to class.  You may be required to travel to other centers or off-campus facilities to teach classes, recruit, or attend meetings.  You may have to provide your own transportation to other centers or off-campus facilities when such travel is necessary. Exposed to live animals on and off site.

Occasional (10-33%) Lifting or moving instructional and laboratory equipment and animals such as projectors, TV monitors, and cameras on carts or trailers.   Potentially subject to distressed students. Carrying classroom materials weighing up to 100 pounds to class and work-based learning opportunities.

Persons in this position must receive instruction in dealing with bloodborne pathogens, freedom of speech, and mandatory reporting.
