Position Description Summary

The Department of Psychology at Commonwealth University of Pennsylvania invites applications for a temporary Instructor position beginning August 2024. The area of specialization is open, with the successful applicant having the ability to teach classes in the area of clinical/counseling psychology (e.g., Psychological Disorders, Psychological Assessment, Helping Skills, and Theories of Counseling).

The home campus for this position is Lock Haven with the expectation of serving a multi-campus University within the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education.

About the College: The Psychology Department is housed within the College of Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities (CASSH). Other departments within the college include Anthropology/Sociology/Criminal Justice, Communication Studies, English, History/Political Science/Philosophy, Languages & Cultures, Media & Journalism, Music/Theatre/Dance, and Visual Arts. Psychology is the largest student major in the college.

Duties

The successful applicant will be expected to teach four courses (two to three preps) each semester during the academic year. The availability to teach 50% of courseload face-to-face at the Lock Haven campus is preferred, online course offerings will also be expected. The applicant must be qualified to teach courses such as Psychological Disorders, Psychological Assessment, Helping Skills, and Theories of Counseling.

Minimum Qualifications

Master's degree in Psychology

Prior teaching of relevant courses

Experience with online instructional delivery

Preferred Qualifications

PhD in Psychology

The initial one-year appointment may be extended for one (1) additional year for the following academic year 2025-26.

  • The extension will be based upon:

o Acceptable performance evidenced by the performance evaluation process during the initial year of the appointment;

o Student enrollment;

o Availability of funding;

o Recommended by the majority of regular full-time department faculty.

Background Clearances

Offers of employment are conditional, pending successful completion of the background clearances mandated by Act 153 of 2014 and Board of Governors Policy 2014-01-A: Protection of Minors. In order to qualify for a provisional appointment, the Applicant Acknowledgement Consent Form, Provisional Hire Form, Pennsylvania State Police and Justifacts portion of the clearance process must be successfully completed prior to your start date. The remaining PA Child Abuse History Clearance and FBI Clearance must be successfully completed and returned as soon as possible within the first 90 days of employment.
