Minimum Qualifications

  • Minimum of an Associate degree in Surgical Technology; Bachelor's degree preferred.

  • Documented education or experience in instructional methodology, curriculum design and program planning, preferred.

  • Graduate of an education program in surgical technology accredited by a nationally recognized programmatic accreditation agency;

  • Possess a credential in the field of surgical technology through a national certification program that is accredited by the National Commission on Certifying Agencies (NCCA).

  • Have a minimum total of five (5) years of experience, either in the operating room scrub role or as an instructor in surgical technology, or a combination of both, within the past ten (10) years.

Examples of Work

The following constitutes an agreement between Bossier Parish Community College and the Surgical Technology Program Director concerning performance responsibilities specific to the program. This program director will receive a 20% released time from a normal faculty workload to address these responsibilities.

The program director is responsible for the overall quality and coordination of the program, including the trainee's experiential training, through the performance of the following responsibilities:

  • Coordinate educational experiences for the program including:

  • Curriculum development and revision

  • Course syllabi development and revision

  • Textbook review and adoption

  • Selection of trainees based on qualification of applicants (by the first day of class)

  • To ensure that program students are aware of all program requirements, schedule and coordinate all program meetings and ensure that the program handbook is current, accurate, and accessible to the students.

  • Provide oversight of the experiential phase of the program by:

  • Performing an annual review of experiential sites to include verification of license and services.

  • Verify that each training site is accepted by recognized organizations appropriate to the practice setting.

  • Performing an onsite review of each current experiential site at least annually

  • Verifying the credentials of each experiential site coordinator

  • Reviewing student and faculty evaluations of each experiential site.

  • Develop and approve the list of assigned sites prior to placement of students

  • Approve and distribute the preceptor handbook, prior to distribution.

  • Monitor student performance and eligibility through onsite visits and other methods, as appropriate.

Evaluation of student achievement of educational objectives to include knowledge, skills and abilities. Approval of program completers.Conduct annual review of program website, catalog entries, and curriculum sheets

Ensure the completion, compilation and analysis of all program surveys.Develop and evaluate program assessments and outcomes and submit program assessment data to the division dean annually.Perform a comprehensive program review of the surgical technology program at least every three years, according the schedule established by the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs.Annually, coordinate and conduct two advisory committee meetings comprised of , surgical technicians, a community representative, a surgeon, a currently enrolled student, employers of program graduates, division dean, representative of the College administration, and others as deemed appropriate. Ensures that at least annually the advisory committee reviews and approves each of the following items:

  • Curriculum sufficient to make possible the attainment of all educational goals and objectives

  • Curriculum length is appropriate to meet the standards established by the Louisiana Board of Regents

  • Criteria for experiential sites, and approval of new sites

  • Criteria for admission of students to the program level courses

  • Criteria for student progression and completion of the program

  • Program learning outcomes

  • Program strategic plan

Maintain program records on clinical applicants, students and graduates, as required by the accrediting agency, licensing agencies, regulatory board, and institutional guidelines.Meet with program faculty to coordinate instruction.Provide input on program equipment needs. Order supplies for program, as needed.Advise and counsel program students and potential students

Meet with each program student at least once per semester to review and document student progress toward identified educational goals.Review accreditation guidelines annually and submit required accreditation information, as required.Remain current on regulatory, accreditation, and technical developments in the program field.Maintain current information on job availability, placement and salary for the program graduates.Promote the program within the institution and community.Meet criteria for professional growth as required by the institution, accrediting and regulatory agencies.Establish annual program goals and objectives, based on program assessment, advisory committee input and institutional goals.Assist in the observation and evaluation of adjunct program faculty.Other duties as assigned.Instructor duties to include, but not limited to:

  • Instruction of students in Surgical Technology.

  • Contributions to the continued development of the curriculum.

  • Participate in professional growth and community service.

  • Maintenance of conference and academic advising hours.

  • Participation in committees as assigned.

  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must have use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of the telephone and personal contact as normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, hear and handle or feel objects and controls.

  • Must have physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office equipment such as, but not limited to, personal computer, calculator, copier, and fax machine.

  • Ability to occasionally lift or carry up to 10 pounds.

  • Must be capable of sitting in stationary position for 50% or more of time.
