Department Information

Our Culinary and Baking Department is seeking a part-time faculty member to provide both substitution and potential course assignment instruction for both Culinary and Baking courses.

  • Beyond the required education and experience, instructors must have a passion for what they teach and have teaching styles that support student success. Instructors are responsible for following Division and College procedures in support of teaching and learning.

Required QUALIFICATIONS

Required Education:

  • Associate of Applied Science or higher in Culinary Arts

OR

  • Bachelor's degree in any field, combined with at least one year relevant experience as a Culinary educator.

Required Experience:

  • Five (5) years of experience in the Culinary field.

And

  • Demonstrated culinary skills and the ability to organize and prepare relevant materials for effective presentation in a classroom environment; and the ability to teach.

Licensure or Certification Requirements Conditions of Employment:

Preferred QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred Education

  • US or Foreign country equivalent of a Culinary Arts degree.

  • Possess an American Culinary Federation (ACF) Certification of Certified Working Chef/Pastry Chef.

  • ServeSafe Managers Certification or equivalent.

  • Current membership in relevant professional organization(s).

Preferred Experience

  • Recent college or high school teaching experience

  • Record of excellence in college or secondary teaching in the field of Culinary Arts and Baking and Pastry

  • Experience building and designing curriculum both online and in person.

  • Extensive experience working with a diverse group of high-barrier populations.

  • Experience in training incumbent employees (on-the-job training).

  • Versed in large scratch baked goods production.

  • Versed in large scratch recipes and cooked to order line production.

  • Experience with working in kitchens featuring contemporary American restaurant cuisine.

Position Purpose:

Provide quality instruction in all delivery methods and formats within the Culinary Arts and Baking & Pastry Programs. The faculty member's relationship with the student is one of the teachers of record and facilitator of learning. This individual can serve as a substitute or possible course assignment for Culinary and Baking courses.

Essential Functions:

  • Teach interactive Baking and Pastry or Culinary curricula and lesson plans to include instruction in the varied learning environments, including in-person, online, remote, and hybrid formats.

  • Apply clear and comprehensive tools to assess student performance and proficiency.

  • Instruct and demonstrate to students how to prepare a wide variety of dishes such as pastas, seafood and casseroles etc. following traditional and modern recipes.

  • Maintain proper safe handling and correct temperatures of all food products.

  • Maintain a high level of cleanliness, sanitation, and organization in all work areas.

  • Ensure compliance with food hygiene, sanitation and Health and Safety standards

  • Check the condition of equipment and devices used for class.

  • Report all equipment problems and maintenance issues, known safety hazards, or unsafe practices and procedures to the supervisor

Support student learning through activities that include:

  • Exhibit compliance with College policies and procedures, accountability for leave time, timesheet completion, release time, textbook ordering and related functions

  • Sustain currency in discipline and innovation in teaching

  • Maintain and post teaching schedule, regular meetings and office hours

  • Maintain physical campus presence for instruction and daily needs of students, departments, college, and community, as specified in the College Operations Policies and Procedures.

  • Maintain requirements for student records, attendance, grades, and/or other documentation; ensure a safe, quality classroom or lab, including equipment, supplies, and inventory

  • Problem solve and manage sensitive information with appropriate awareness of FERPA standards; maintain confidentiality and sensitivity to the privacy needs of students.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Curriculum Delivery

  • Provide high-quality classroom instruction

  • Incorporate college values into the curriculum and promote a respectful learning environment including facilitating awareness of multicultural and diversity issues in curricula

  • Teach and develop all class syllabi and course materials, in a form that can be directly delivered to, and used by, students

  • Confer with students on course materials

  • Deliver curriculum to students in traditional and online formats.

Online Teaching and Student Support

  • Expect to make use of the Learning Management System (LMS) to publish and update content, post grades and promote student engagement among students with course content;

  • Use multiple modes of communication tools including online publishing, audio, and video tools

  • Be present within the online course to interact with students, help guide asynchronous discussions and provide opportunities for students' voices to be heard within the online course

  • Monitor student progress and provide reasonable coaching and assistance to struggling students towards success

  • Review and grade all work submitted by students and provide timely and substantive feedback

  • Respond to student inquiries within 48 hours

  • Ensure that all materials created are accessible and meet the guidelines of Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act

  • Post student attendance, grades, and course syllabus to the college LMS in accordance with college timelines

  • Use current best practices and pedagogies for teaching online including the application of online course quality frameworks for clearly providing course learning objectives to students, while consistently setting clear weekly and term-long expectations for work and assessment

Physical Demands/Working Environment:

This position works indoors and is exposed to usual office working conditions as well as a kitchen classroom. This position requires that an employee is able to sit or stand for extended periods of time; perform cognitive and psychometric work for more than six (6) hours a day. Use of hands to finger, handle, reach or feel; ability to taste and smell. The employee is required to sit and stoop, kneel, or crouch. The employee must be able to lift and/or move up to fifty (50) pounds with or without assistance. Work Safely

  • Able to produce and teach techniques on a wide range of baked foods including but not limited to rolls, muffins, mousse, fruit crisps etc.

  • Ability to teach contemporary methods to present food products attractively.

  • Knowledge of the differences among learning styles, current advances in teaching methods and uses of technology in education, and the ability to integrate these elements into curricula and teaching methods.
