Other Conditions: State extramural funds. Appointment to begin August 2024. Renewal contingent upon satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and program needs. Selectee is required to pass a criminal background check and complete Title XI training.

Duties and Responsibilities

Teach special education courses and supervise teacher candidates on all islands via a variety of delivery modes (in-person, distance); Participate in on-going curriculum and program development activities; provide service to the department and college; contribute to the University of Hawaii's mission as being a Hawaiian place of learning. Other duties as assigned.

Instructor Minimum Qualifications

  • Master's degree in special education or in a closely related field from an accredited four-year college or university;

  • Expertise in instructional and assistive technology for students with disabilities;

  • Broad knowledge of K-12 special education;

  • At least two years of K-12 teaching experience as a licensed special educator;

Assistant Professor Minimum Qualifications

[In addition to the Instructor Minimum Qualification above]

  • Doctorate in Special Education or closely related field from an accredited institution; will consider ABD if completed by August 2024;

  • Evidence of scholarly research activity focused on mathematics and/or instructional and assistive technology;

  • Any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience that provides the required education, knowledge, skills, and abilities as indicated.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Experience providing professional development or university coursework for special educators;

  • Broad knowledge of evidence-based practices in special education;

  • Broad knowledge of Universal Design for Learning and technologies for learning;

  • Knowledge of UHM special education teacher training programs;

  • Experience teaching special education in Hawaii;

  • Experience with nontraditional university student populations from racially/ethnically and culturally diverse backgrounds.
