Instructor of Physics (Non-Tenure Track)

The Avila University College of Arts and Sciences, guided by the mission of excellence in teaching and learning, and dedicated to the service to the Dear Neighbor is actively seeking a full-time Instructor in Physics to join our faculty. The successful candidate will be able to develop and teach courses and labs in physics. The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to develop and teach general education science electives related to physics. The ideal candidate would also be able to teach developmental or introductory math courses, as needed. This is an academic, 10-month, non-tenure track appointment, eligible for annual renewal based on performance. The appointment will begin in August 2024.

Responsibilities:

  • Teach an equivalent to 15 credit hours per semester (5:5 load for Fall:Spring semesters).

  • Teach Lecture and laboratory courses for i) algebraic based 2-semester physics course sequence primarily for professional health majors and ii) a general studies physics concepts course for multiple majors

  • The ideal candidate will also be able to assist and support the mathematics curriculum teaching first-year mathematics courses

  • Provide instruction, activities, assignments, assessments, and feedback to adequately cover all objectives for the specific course(s) taught and the overall Physics curriculum.

  • Deliver content using effectual methods which are appropriate to students with differing abilities, levels of preparation, and cultural experience.

  • Champion diversity, build an inclusive culture and learning experience, and maintain an equitable learning environment.

  • If desired, participate in service efforts in the School of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) and the College of Arts & Sciences.

Qualifications:

  • A Master's degree in Physics, or a closely related discipline, completed by the date of appointment. Degrees in related disciplines can be considered if 18 credit hours of physics discipline graduate coursework from an accredited university/college is attained.

  • Experience teaching college level physics courses (experience can include graduate teaching assistantships).

  • Successful candidates should showcase their work and experience in contributing to a climate that supports a diverse student body, serves first-generation college students, multilingual learners, and contributions to equity and social justice through their work.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Physics, or a closely related discipline is preferred.

  • Doctoral candidates with All but Dissertation (ABD) status would be given full consideration if 18 credit hours of discipline graduate coursework from an accredited university/college is attained.

  • The ideal candidate will have enough graduate credit hours in physics and mathematics so instruction in undergraduate courses in both disciplines is possible.

  • Multilingual skills highly preferred.
