Position Title Instructor, Dental Hygiene FLSA FT/PT Full Time Hours Per Week 37.5 Work Schedule M-F Grade F-2 Minimum Compensation General Responsibilities

The Instructor is responsible for implementing aspects of didactic using didactic materials as well as on-line methods, laboratory, and clinical teaching in Dental Hygiene related courses as needed, maintaining inventory of supplies and equipment, curriculum development, student advising and orientation, and supporting Howard Community College and Dental Hygiene mission and initiatives. Duties also include implementing and instructing the following areas: instrumentation, OSHA, infection control and blood-borne pathogens, HIPAA, monitoring of nitrous oxide, and local anesthesia. The instructor must be current in the knowledgeable of current technologies in clinic and appropriate to the area of instruction.

Budgeted faculty member, at any level and in any college division, is expected to teach 14-16 units per semester. Twelve-month faculty are expected to teach an additional 6-credits over winter and/or summer. Other teaching requirements and unit definitions can be found in the faculty handbook. In addition to teaching, faculty are expected to maintain at least 5 office hours per week.

Work Performed

WORK PERFORMED

  • Clinical instructor in the dental hygiene clinic and/or labs.

  • Set up instructional equipment and supplies.

  • Assist students in orienting to the laboratories and in practicing skills.

  • Participate in curriculum development and revision

  • Collaborate with dental hygiene program chair and team on accreditation

  • Other tasks as assigned.

  • Create a supportive and nurturing learning environment where students feel safe to learn and seek assistance when needed.

  • Provide opportunities outside of class for students to get assistance. (teaching/service)

  • Enforce the college rules as published in the Student Handbook and Howard Community College Catalog.

  • Facilitates interactive learning environments (teaching)

  • Incorporates the teaching principles of Howard Community College into their teaching: evidence-based practice, problem-based learning, and interprofessional practice.

  • Participates in annual trainings on best practices for teaching excellence (Breaking Developments) (teaching/scholarship)

  • Uses data for continuous improvement (teaching/scholarship/service)

  • Evaluates students and provides documented feedback to students based on course outcomes (teaching)

  • Promoting effective student learning through assignments and class activities including the use of a variety of instructional techniques designed to meet student needs, promoting active and independent learning, and promoting higher-order thinking.

  • Holding classes at the scheduled time for the full period, except for emergency situations.

  • Maintaining accurate attendance scholastic records and submitting required reports to meet deadlines, including submission of final grades by the published deadline.

  • Teaching evening classes as part of regular load when assigned and at least once every two years within the needs of each division.

  • Conducting assigned classes in accordance with the catalog and course description and objectives for the course.

  • Developing methods of assessing student learning as specified in the objectives and providing feedback to students in a timely manner.

  • Teaching students in the clinical environment and providing formative feedback using the clinical progress evaluation tool.

  • Preparing, ordering, and updating normal classroom materials (including new textbooks) in accordance with established deadlines, including routine handouts, audiovisual equipment, library materials, bibliographies, reading lists, textbooks, software etc.

  • Completing administrative duties in accordance with the administrative job description when assigned in lieu of a full teaching load.

  • Attend and actively participate in meetings

  • Communicate with program directors the status of student learning experiences

  • Maintain student records

  • Distribute and summarize surveys

  • Instruct DHYG program content as needed and instruct pre-clinical lab skills, as needed.

  • Clearly communicating to students at the beginning of a course what they are to learn (course descriptions, syllabi, the grading system, and the learning objectives, attendance policy etc.).

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED

  • Experience and knowledge of dental hygiene accreditation procedures for dental hygiene programs

  • Knowledge of current technologies and teaching methodologies in clinic and lab courses

  • Current dental hygiene clinic practice experience

  • Certified dental assistant experience helpful

  • Experience in dental software & digital radiography

  • License in administering local anesthesia for dental hygiene practice

  • Certification/continuing education in monitoring of nitrous oxide for dental hygiene practice

  • Member of the American Dental Hygienists Association

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Registered Dental Hygienist with a Bachelor's Degree in Dental Hygiene from a regionally accredited institution.

  • Five years clinical experience minimal, and three years' experience in education is preferred.

  • Licensed as a registered hygienist in the State of Maryland.

  • Candidate must be familiar with laws governing dental hygiene practice in the state of Maryland.

  • Working knowledge of state of Maryland dental hygiene practice

  • Current CE requirements necessary for dental hygiene license in Maryland

  • Current CPR/BSL certification

  • Current license to practice dental hygiene in Maryland

  • Current dental radiology license

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively

  • Orientation to detail for maintenance of records

  • Ability to multitask and manage time

  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing

  • Regular attendance is a requirement of this job.

Working Conditions

Responsibilities involve deadline, and time driven conditions (i.e., high volume of work and student, faculty and staff contacts) and considerable multi-tasking. Clinical Coordinator must be able to work overtime and outside of normal daytime working hours when necessary to complete assignments, includes flexible daytime hours with occasional evenings or Saturdays. Clinical Coordinator must maintain current certification in CPR and first aid, as well as, maintain up to date health records, maybe subject to criminal background check, drug screen. Must meet clinical agency's health requirements.
