The Maintenance Aviation Instructor will conduct college courses and be responsible for responding to student needs and supporting student success in the Aviation Maintenance Technology Program. The instructor will ensure that instruction complies with FAA 14 CFR Part 147 requirements. The instructor will be responsible for creating an optimum learning environment, supporting college administrative requirements, maintaining competency in their instructional field, and advising students in the pathway to success.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Associates DegreeOR 5-10 years aviation industry experience. Note: Degrees and hours must be from a college accredited by a United States Department of Education accepted accrediting agency such as SACSCOC.

  • Valid Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Airframe and Powerplant License.

  • Meet Transportation Security Administration (TSA) badging requirements to function in the Airport Operating area at Smith Reynolds Airport.

  • Be able to safely operate aircraft and aircraft systems.

  • Valid driver's license with a record in good standing.

  • Must have or be eligible to obtain certification in forklift operation.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Aviation or a related field from a regionally accredited college/university.

  • Avionics and Electronics background experience and/or formalized training (FCC/AET).

  • Teaching and/or industry training experience in aviation topics in any of the following formats: teaching courses, training sessions, conducting professional development workshops, and/or other continuing education seminars.

  • Understand and be committed to the unique nature and role of the College.

  • Greater than 10 years of aviation related industry experience.

  • Post-secondary teaching experience in a Part 147 or industry technical environment.

  • Experience with assessment of student learning outcomes.

  • Experience with distance learning and/or alternate instructional delivery systems.

Essential Duties

Teaching and Curriculum Development

  • Develop, conduct and document appropriate assessment of student learning outcomes in courses and programs/general education as appropriate.

  • Employ teaching strategies & instructional materials for different learning styles.

  • Incorporate, as pedagogically appropriate, current technology in classroom, distance learning and laboratory environments.

  • Create and model a quality learning environment that supports a diverse student population.

  • Prepare, distribute, and utilize instructional support materials, including course syllabi, supplementary materials, instructional media and other devices as appropriate.

  • Update and revise curriculum to maintain currency.

  • Develop new courses as needed to support the instructional mission.

  • Participate in the development and review of course and program/general education outcomes as appropriate.

  • Develop learner-centered lesson plans.

  • Maintain, review, and update course descriptions, objectives, and outlines for courses of instruction and develop new courses of study as necessary.

  • Make recommendations to Program Coordinator for selection of supplies, equipment, necessary repairs textbooks for courses of study, and the scheduling of classroom and laboratory facilities.

  • Participate in departmental activities relative to revising and updating the program(s) in the area of expertise.

Advising:

  • Provide academic advising for students.

  • Promote retention/persistence by assisting students to develop strategies for success.

  • Assist students with the registration and graduation process.

  • Refer students to campus and community resources when appropriate.

  • Participate in department, division and college-wide advising activities.

  • Learn and maintain proficiency with program requirements.

  • Attend training sessions relative to advising.

Professional Development:

  • Participate in activities that achieve approved professional development activities.

  • Maintain current licensure, certification, or other professional credentials required for position.

  • Maintain membership and participation in professional organizations.

  • Read professional literature.

  • Keep abreast of current technology.

  • Attend workshops, conferences, and professional meetings.

  • Maintain and develop online courses and grading.

  • Participate in on-campus professional development activities.

Institutional Service:

  • Adhere to all institutional policies and procedures.

  • Attend all required department, division, and college-wide meetings.

  • Serve on committees as required.

  • Participate in college-wide activities.

Community Relations:

  • Maintain contact with specialized vocations where applicable.

  • Be alert to public relations opportunities and use these to promote the college and the department.

  • Assist in planning and conducting advisory committee meetings.

Language Skills:

  • Read written communications and analyze and interpret both verbal and written communications.

  • Respond coherently both verbally and in writing to students, co-workers and individuals having contact with the College.

  • Respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community.

  • Present information effectively to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.
