Job Description:

The Instructional Technology Specialist III will provide faculty with consultation, support, technical assistance, and creative expertise in the innovative and impactful use of instructional technology to support educational objectives. General activities for this position will focus primarily on promoting the effective use of instructional technologies for face-to-face and online classroom learning, ensuring faculty are equipped to use these technologies to meet instructional needs and goals, and developing content for courses at the institution.

This position will specialize in assisting faculty who wish to learn and incorporate the Learning Management System into their teaching. Daily activities include planning, overseeing, and implementing departmental activities as they relate to learning technology and course design; including LMS training and programming, and partnering with faculty to find creative and effective methods of teaching with technology.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Functional/Technical:

  • Consults with faculty and academic departments about teaching and learning goals for courses and assists faculty in learning, choosing, and implementing technologies best suited to meet identified instructional needs and goals.

  • Coordinates, develops, organizes, and leads programs such as workshops, lectures and training series to inform faculty on trends in instructional technology and methods for effective use of technology in teaching. Ensures faculty are equipped to use specialized tools including: LMS, general administrative technologies (email, Google apps, internal websites, etc.), music technology software and hardware, media and learning asset creation tools, and other instructional technology tools.

  • Supports faculty in their general use of instructional technologies including music technology, the learning management system, face-to-face and remote teaching technology, and other instructional and administrative academic technologies and systems.

  • Plays an active and principal role in training academic departments and individual faculty, while creating strong relationships that help to further departmental goals.

  • Participates as a member of appropriate faculty committees related to technology and faculty development.

  • Actively collaborates with Academic Affairs, Berklee Online, the Boston Conservatory at Berklee, and others to ensure institutional instructional technology initiatives are supported.

Learning Management System and Instructional Design

  • Take the lead role in and is responsible for all departmental activities involving the usage of the LMS, LTIs, and other Instructional Technology in teaching and learning.

  • In collaboration with Academic Affairs, responsible for understanding and assessing teaching and learning needs; and making recommendations on how the learning management system can be used to support those needs.

  • Curriculum Development: Participate in the development and review of curriculum plans to ensure the integration of appropriate technologies.

  • Collaborate with Educators: Work closely with teachers, administrators, and other staff to develop and implement technology-enhanced learning experiences.

  • Evaluate and Recommend Technologies: Research, evaluate, and recommend new and emerging technologies to improve teaching and learning processes.

  • Plan, develops, oversees, implements, and delivers semesterly programming to support faculty in their use of the LMS in teaching. Assesses the impact of departmental LMS and course design programming and reports on its effectiveness.

  • Maintain a focus on how the LMS is being used at the college: gather information; report on, develop methods and make recommendations as to how the college can effectively continue to successfully integrate the LMS into teaching.

  • Design and Develop Educational Materials: Create and implement instructional materials and resources that integrate technology effectively into the curriculum.

  • Oversee and manage the course template development process for departments and faculty.

  • Develop and maintain departmental process for course design, makes updates based on industry standards and data gathered through workshops and LMS usage.

  • Support Online and Blended Learning: Provide support for online and blended learning initiatives, including course design and management.

  • Data Analysis and Reporting: Analyze educational data and technology usage to inform decision-making and improve instructional strategies.

  • Policy Development: Assist in the development and implementation of policies and procedures related to the use of instructional technology.

  • Digital Literacy Promotion: Promote digital literacy skills among students and staff, ensuring they can effectively use technology for learning and teaching.

Additional Duties When Required:

  • Conducts New Faculty Orientation technology training and coordinates with Academic Services and IT to ensure proper and timely account creation.

  • Assists with building and generating media and learning assets that support faculty and their teaching including: creation of screencasts, video filming/editing, audio recording/editing, photography, HTML 5 and web programming, creation of motion graphics animation, post production (color grading, audio mastering, compression) and more.

  • Assists department staff with daily operational tasks including: support ticket work, communicating ticket and project progress to faculty, scheduling group and 1-on-1 training sessions, coordinating with student employees to complete daily work, assisting with departmental and division-wide projects, and general support and maintenance of departmental systems.

  • May be required to work additional hours during projects, events, start of semesters, or confronted with emergency, critical, or unusual circumstances.

Professional Development:

  • Stay informed of technology advancements, specifically those that are used or could be used at Berklee and share this knowledge with others.

  • Stay up-to-date with technology pertaining to this position and maintain any required certifications.

  • Participate in departmental, technical and interpersonal skills training as required.

MINIMUM JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 5+ years instructional technology experience in an academic environment.

  • A strong understanding of information delivery and learning styles. Familiarity with instructional design principles, learning theories, and pedagogy associated with instructional technology.

  • Demonstrated proficiency in instructional technology support and training. Experience working with instructors in instructional design and course development.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED:

  • Expertise in using, supporting, and performing administrative tasks in Learning Management Systems, preferably Canvas and Moodle.

  • Ability to analyze and evaluate technologies for potential application in instruction and at an enterprise level.

  • Experience in the design, development, and evaluation of college-level instructional technology projects.

  • Educational Technology Tools: Proficiency with a variety of educational technology tools and software, such as learning management systems (LMS), interactive whiteboards, and educational apps.

  • Digital Literacy: Knowledge of digital literacy concepts and the ability to teach and promote these skills among students and staff.

  • Data Analysis: Ability to analyze educational data and technology usage to inform instructional practices and decision-making.

  • Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to explain complex technical concepts to non-technical users.

  • Collaboration: Strong collaboration and teamwork skills, with the ability to work effectively with teachers, administrators, and other stakeholders.

  • Project Management: Project management skills, including the ability to plan, implement, and manage technology initiatives and projects without supervision.

  • Adaptability: Ability to adapt to new technologies and educational trends, and a willingness to continuously learn and improve.

  • Problem-Solving: Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to develop innovative solutions to enhance teaching and learning.

  • Knowledge of Educational Theories: Understanding of educational theories and pedagogical practices, particularly those related to technology integration.

  • Compliance and Policy Knowledge: Knowledge of relevant policies, regulations, and ethical considerations related to the use of technology in education.

  • Must possess exceptional interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively with faculty and staff from diverse professional and academic disciplines who have varying degrees of technological competence.

  • Must be reliable, taking ownership of assigned responsibilities

  • Ability to lead small teams when called upon.

  • Excellent organizational and time management skills, including the ability to multitask, prioritize, and independently manage a changing workload and schedule.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES PREFERRED:

  • Master's degree or equivalent experience.

  • Specialized knowledge of and proficiency with various software products used in building media and learning assets, including but not limited to: HTML/CSS, Javascript, Screenflow, Premiere, Final Cut Pro, Motion, Photoshop, Illustrator, Hype, audio recording and editing software, emerging AI tools, and others.

  • Formal study of music is strongly preferred.

  • Knowledge of music specific instructional technologies including: music notation software (Finale, Sibelius, Flat.IO, NoteFlight), digital audio workstations (Pro Tools, Logic, Digital Performer, Reason), audio hardware and interfaces, USB MIDI keyboards, and others.
