ABOUT THE POSITION: The M. Louis Salmon Library at the University of Alabama in Huntsville invites applications for an Instructional Services and Scholarly Communications Librarian position at the rank of Librarian I or Librarian II, commensurate with experience. The library seeks a motivated, creative, and user-focused professional who can assist with its instructional and scholarly communications initiatives.

Responsibilities: Reporting to the Director of Research, Information and User Services, the Instructional Services and Scholarly Communications Librarian assists the M. Louis Salmon Library in its mission to provide The University of Alabama in Huntsville with the discovery, creation, and communication of knowledge via the Salmon Library's resources and services. This position works with teaching faculty to develop library instruction materials for assignment-focused, course-specific needs, as well as identify opportunities for outreach in assigned academic departments. The ideal candidate possesses a strong desire to teach and seek out further knowledge in teaching and learning theories. Other responsibilities include designing and conducting library instruction sessions for faculty and students and working at the Research Help Desk to provide patron research assistance. This position will also support future scholarly communications endeavors, such as Open Access Initiatives, Open Educational Resources, and scholarly publishing trends, including providing support for faculty and student scholarly communication endeavors, such as promoting the use of open educational resources and awareness of the university's institutional repository.

The candidate will work in a team environment and must demonstrate a desire for continual learning, development, and application of expertise through work-related experiences and professional development opportunities. This position may also provide outreach to academic and non-academic units, develop events and services that promote the library's services, supervise students as required, and perform other duties/functions as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • A Master of Library Science from an ALA-accredited institution or a master's degree relevant to the individual's subject specialty

  • Minimum of one year providing instruction in a library setting

  • Minimum of two years of academic library experience

  • Familiarity with the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education

  • Knowledge and understanding of current trends in scholarly communications, including Open Access Initiatives, Open Educational Resources, copyright laws, and institutional repositories

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working with customers/patrons to provide information and services

  • Effective oral and written communication skills

  • Knowledge of trends and services in academic libraries to support undergraduate and graduate education

  • Knowledge of current and emerging trends in information literacy instruction and information technologies

  • Understanding of ways to market and promote instruction, collections, and services to various groups

  • Experience with SpringShare's LibGuides and LibAnswers

  • Familiarity with EndNote and Zotero citation tools

  • Familiarity with the Scopus, ORCID, and Digital Commons platforms

  • Ability to successfully initiate, track, and manage projects

  • Demonstration of ability, interest, and willingness to assume additional and/or new responsibilities, along with the ability to set and model high-performance standards

  • Strong interpersonal skills evidenced by the ability to work cooperatively and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues, faculty, staff, and students in a professional manner

  • Readiness to serve a diverse academic community with professionalism
