WHAT YOU'LL DO

Under the general supervision of a Dean, and under the work direction of an Instructor, an Instructional Lab Technician II - Chemistry performs complex technical work related to chemistry; oversees the operation and maintenance of a highly technical or complex instructional laboratory, including maintaining supplies, preparing laboratory equipment, reagents, and chemicals for class demonstrations and experiments.

There is currently one full-time (40hrs/week, 12 mos/year) vacancy located at Oxnard College.

This recruitment is being conducted to establish a list of eligible candidates that will be used to fill District-wide, current and upcoming, temporary and regular vacancies for the duration of the list, not to exceed one year. WHERE YOU'LL WORKOxnard College was founded in 1975 and is the newest of the three community colleges in the county.

Representative Duties

Prepare and set up laboratory equipment, reagents, chemicals and other teaching aids for class demonstrations and experiments. E

Order, receive, inspect and inventory materials, chemicals, and laboratory equipment; assure adequate quantities are available for instructional use. E

Maintain stock rooms, laboratories and other assigned areas in a safe, clean and orderly condition; encourage awareness of and oversee the proper use of facilities and safe practices. E

Prepare, label and maintain adequate quantities of stock solutions and reagents. E

Prepare chemical solutions and unknowns for laboratory demonstrations, practical examinations and general instruction; arrange for proper storage and disposal of toxic, caustic or flammable chemicals. E

Prepare and issue materials and equipment for student use; monitor and maintain records of materials and equipment on loan to or checked out by students and instructors. E

Maintain a variety of files and records regarding instructional materials, inventories, purchase orders and equipment repairs; organize, prepare and maintain laboratory procedures manuals; perform general clerical duties as needed. E

Test, adjust, maintain and perform minor repairs including necessary calibrations to apparatus and equipment; send equipment out for major repairs. E

Assign and maintain records of student lockers; equip lockers with proper equipment and supplies. E

Assist in preparation of the preliminary laboratory budget; project estimated needs, supplies and requests; monitor budget expenditures. E

Use and operate a variety of technical equipment and measuring devices including burets, volumetric glassware, pH meters, chromatograph, analytical balance, voltmeter, and spectrophotometer. E

Screen, select, train, evaluate and provide work direction for student workers. E

Work collaboratively and professionally with faculty, staff, students, and stakeholders from diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, and ethnic communities. E

Demonstrate cultural humility, sensitivity, and equity-mindedness in working with individuals from diverse communities; model inclusive behaviors; and achieve equity in assignment-related outcomes. E

Minimum Qualifications

Any combination equivalent to: bachelor's degree in chemistry and two years of work experience in a field of specialty, preferably in an instructional setting.

EXAMINATION AND SELECTION PROCESS:

A) Training and Experience Evaluation = Qualifying (pass/fail)

B) Technical Interview = 100% weighting on final score

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE (T&E) EVALUATION:

A T&E is an assessment of training and experience, beyond the minimum requirements, that has prepared the candidate for the position as evidenced in the application materials. Please be sure to answer every component of each supplemental question as your responses will be scored and serve as your score on the training and experience (T&E) evaluation.

The candidates with the highest passing scores on the T&E will be invited to the technical interview.

ELIGIBILITY LIST:

Upon completion of the examination, the eligibility list will be compiled by combining the final examination score with applicable seniority and veteran's credits, if any. The candidates will be ranked according to their total score on the eligibility list.

Certification will be made from the highest three ranks of the eligibility list. This eligibility list will be used to fill current vacancies for up to one year from the date of the technical interview.

PROBATIONARY PERIOD:

All appointments made from eligibility lists for initial appointment or for promotion, with certain exceptions, shall be probationary for a period of six (6) months or one hundred thirty (130) days of paid service, whichever is longer. Classified management, police, and designated executive classifications shall be probationary for a period of one (1) year of paid service from initial appointment or promotion.
