WHAT YOU'LL DO:

Under the direction of a Dean or assigned supervisor, perform technical work related to the operation and maintenance of the Agriculture program facilities, including living laboratories; and provide instructional support and oversee students as they participate in practicing skills in outdoor and indoor laboratories.

There is currently one full-time (12 months/year, 40 hours/week) vacancy located at Ventura College.

This recruitment is being conducted to establish a list of eligible candidates that will be used to fill district-wide, current and upcoming, temporary and regular vacancies for the duration of the list, not to exceed one year.

Established in 1925, Ventura College was one of the first community colleges in California and currently has an enrollment of 14,500 students. Located approximately 60 miles north of Los Angeles and 30 miles south of Santa Barbara, the 112-acre campus is set in the rolling hills of Ventura - so close to the ocean that there is a clear view of the Channel Islands from several spots on campus.

SALARY PLACEMENTNew Employees: Generally, new employees are placed on the first step of the appropriate range of the salary schedule.

Current Employees: An employee who is promoted will be placed on the salary step of the new range of the appropriate salary schedule that provides a minimum increase comparable to a one-step increase in salary.

Representative Duties

Organize and oversee the operation, maintenance, and proper care of agriculture program facilities and living laboratories (e.g. avocado orchard, greenhouse, hoop house). E

Provide instructional support to individuals and small groups of agriculture students; reinforce concepts, techniques, and practical applications presented by the instructor. E

Prepare and set up laboratory equipment, tools, supplies, and other teaching aids for demonstrations and experiments, practical examinations, and student assignments; conduct tests of supplies and materials to ensure accurate mixtures and quantities. E

Monitor the health of all living laboratory plant specimens; identify common pest and plant disease issues; perform minor application of pest control treatments. E

Coordinate with industry and community partners to perform specialty care of living laboratories (e.g. irrigation, harvesting, spraying, etc.). E

Operate and demonstrate safe and proper use of equipment and tools (e.g. pruning shears, shovels, wheelbarrows, rakes, soil meters, microscopes); encourage awareness of safe practices and oversee the proper use of the facilities, equipment, and tools. E

Test, adjust, calibrate, maintain, and perform minor repairs on apparatus and equipment, such as microscopes, autoclaves, soil meters, diagnostic tools, etc.; coordinate regular maintenance and major repairs of large equipment. E

Prepare and issue materials and equipment for student use in a lab; monitor and maintain records of materials and equipment on loan to or checked out by students and faculty. E

Maintain the lab, equipment storage facility, and other assigned areas in a safe, clean and orderly condition. E

Order and receive lab supplies, materials, parts, and equipment; track, monitor, and maintain inventories, ensure adequate quantities are available for timely instructional use; attain lab materials from stores and coordinate large deliveries; monitor supply budget. E

Ensure the accurate labeling and orderly, safe, and proper storage of all supplies, materials, and equipment. E

Develop, maintain, and review safety protocols for chemical supplies; operate preventative and responsive safety equipment (e.g. eye flush stations); review Safety Data Sheets and chemical safe handling instructions on a regular basis; log working conditions of safety equipment in accordance with OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) requirements; ensure the safe disposal of hazardous waste. E

Assist with field trip preparation; coordinate logistics with administrators and industry partners; accompany students on field trips and visits to industry and partner locations, as required. E

Maintain a variety of files and records regarding instructional materials, inventories, purchase orders and equipment repairs; organize, prepare and maintain laboratory procedure manuals; perform general clerical duties as needed. E

Provide tours and orientations of Agriculture program facilities to internal and external constituents. E

Screen, select, train and provide work direction for student workers. E

Work collaboratively and professionally with faculty, staff, students, and stakeholders from diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, and ethnic communities. E

Demonstrate cultural humility, sensitivity, and equity-mindedness in working with individuals from diverse communities; model inclusive behaviors; and achieve equity in assignment-related outcomes. E

E = Essential duties

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from high school or equivalent AND five years of experience in a commercial agricultural production setting

OR

Graduation from high school or equivalent AND completion of an agriculture certificate program of at least 18 units AND three years of experience in a commercial agricultural production setting

OR

An associate degree in agriculture, soil science, horticulture or related field AND two years of experience in a commercial agricultural production setting

OR

A bachelor's degree in agriculture, plant science, soil science, horticulture or closely related field

EXAMINATION AND SELECTION PROCESS:

This is an examination open to the public and current district employees seeking a promotional opportunity. To ensure consideration, please submit your application materials by the posted deadline date on this bulletin.

A) Training and Experience Evaluation = Qualifying (pass/fail)

B) Technical Interview = 100% weighting on final score

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE (T&E) EVALUATION:

A T&E is an assessment of training and experience, beyond the minimum requirements, that has prepared the candidate for the position as evidenced in the application materials. Please be sure to answer every component of each supplemental question as your responses will be scored and serve as your score on the training and experience (T&E) evaluation.

The candidates with the highest passing scores on the T&E will be invited to the technical interview.

ELIGIBILITY LIST:

Upon completion of the examination, the eligibility list will be compiled by combining the final examination score with applicable seniority and veteran's credits, if any. The candidates will be ranked according to their total score on the eligibility list.

Certification will be made from the highest three ranks of the eligibility list. This eligibility list will be used to fill current vacancies for up to one year from the date of the technical interview.

PROBATIONARY PERIOD:

All appointments made from eligibility lists for initial appointment or for promotion, with certain exceptions, shall be probationary for a period of six (6) months or one hundred thirty (130) days of paid service, whichever is longer. Classified management, police, and designated executive classifications shall be probationary for a period of one (1) year of paid service from initial appointment or promotion.
