Under the direction of the Hub for Teaching and Learning Director, the Instructional Designer provides support for instructional advancement initiatives across the University of Michigan-Dearborn campus. As a member of the Hub team, the Instructional Designer will help design, develop and implement online, hybrid, and face-to-face courses. The position's duties include conducting learning and teaching consultations, developing and delivering instructional workshops; collaborating on instructional and training development, facilitating learning colloquia/communities; and working on curriculum redesign projects.


  • Use Learning Experience Design principles to partner closely with faculty through individual consultations on online, hybrid, and face-to-face course and curriculum design, aligned to a cohesive vision for flexible, creative, student-centered, and high-quality learning experiences

  • Collaborate across campus in efforts to redesign curricula, based on educational research, in order to include more high-impact practices and student-centered pedagogy

  • Develop and disseminate resources, research, and information about best practices relating to teaching and learning

  • Develop and deliver instructional workshops; assist in the facilitation of learning colloquia/communities

  • Maintain knowledge of new and emerging technologies, instructional design theories, and approaches and policies for potential application to instructional opportunities

  • Perform other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications*

  • Master's degree in learning design, instructional design, instructional/educational technology, or related field

  • Pedagogical knowledge of teaching, including learning styles, instructional design theory and best practices and ability to create examples of educational strategies across various disciplines

  • 2 years of experience working in instructional design or in other related work

  • Experience consulting with faculty in a variety of disciplines

  • Demonstrated superior communication skills and strong interpersonal skills

  • Demonstrated ability and experience working with deadlines

  • Knowledge of the appropriate tools, media, and teaching strategies to accomplish course goals, objectives, and outcomes, assisting with the identification, selection, and application of appropriate assessment tools and strategies needed by faculty

Desired Qualifications*

  • Ph.D. in learning design, instructional design, instructional/educational technology, or related field

  • Teaching or instructional experience

  • Experience working with faculty and administrators on the design, development, delivery, and assessment of effective pedagogies

  • Experience designing and developing courses

  • Knowledge of teaching pedagogies for inclusion and access, in particular for nontraditional and underrepresented students

From this analysis you will establish rigorous performance objectives for the solution and identify the optimum type or types of solutions to meet customer requirements and budget and time constraints. * Use established methodologies in all stages of the instructional design process, including needs assessment, analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. * Review products throughout analysis, design, and development for adherence to style guidelines, writing standards, and sensible course/task flow Are You Qualified? * Four (4) year degree in related field or certification in Instructional Design or related field; MA in Instructional Technology, Instructional Design or Training and Development preferred. * Minimum of 3 – 5 years' experience developing, analyzing, and measuring instructional training programs using CBT and WBT products for external customers * Experience with e-learning applications Adobe Captivate (additional experience preferred in Lectora, ToolBook, Authorware, Flash, etc.). * Experience with Inline Manual or WalkMe a plus. * Possess excellent written and oral communication and presentation skills.
