Job Summary:

UniFirst Corporation is currently seeking an Instructional Designer to join the Learning and Development department.

The Instructional Designer plans, designs, and implements innovative end-to-end entry, intermediate, and advanced level training courses or learning projects for an engaging learning experience for our employees. S/he is responsible for overseeing the creative direction and project management associated with the development of online, in person and hybrid courses. Areas of training content can vary from Leadership Development, Safety, Compliance, Human Resources, etc.

The Instructional Designer will also support and work with the subject matter experts designing the courses and the reviewers conducting the review of the courses. S/he will create a template for all courses and, as the project manager, will create the processes and procedures necessary for a smooth design and delivery process.

Identifies and plans appropriate instructional content design strategies and objectives, curriculum, learning activities, and assessment materials based on analysis of tasks, learners, and subject matter to engage and educate end users on processes, concepts, products, product features, or other various topics, ensuring the content matches the objectives.

  • Develops training materials for instructors, such as online course instructional guides, master training documents, and facilitator guides.

  • Confers with internal and external subject matter experts to identify and determine needs of the course and appropriate method of delivery based on what the end-users need to learn.

  • Assists subject matter experts in translating content knowledge into a course design map leading to the final product of an online, in person or hybrid course.

  • Develops and publishes interactive and engaging multimedia course content and instructional material for online delivery, including text, graphics, interactive elements, and rich media, using a variety of media and web content applications, audio, and video capture programs.

  • Manages course development projects from inception to completion in accordance with instructional design principles.

  • Determines, communicates, and manages scope of project, requirements, goals, and timeline.

  • Demonstrates and utilizes effective needs analysis, project management, course development, and evaluation skills, as well as knowledge of how people learn and on how to help them learn better.

  • Revises, rewrites, and structures content and activities to shape it for learning needs.

  • Adapts instructional materials and creates media to support learning, e.g. visual aids for face-to-face and various multimedia for e-learning and online.

  • Researches and maintains an understanding of teaching methods and tools; pursues and utilizes knowledge of emerging technologies, tools, and trends in education and learning strategies.


  • Excellent project management skills.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Ability to manage multiple course developments simultaneously.

  • At least three to five years' experience in instructional design and revision, including designing online courses and creating courses from master syllabus through duplication on a learning management system.

  • Degree or advanced certificate in instructional design or related field highly desirable.

  • Experience in training, including training or performance analysis

  • Experience with Microsoft 365 and SharePoint 365

  • Previous experience with customer service or call center training is a plus

Position Statement: The Director of Risk Management will support UniFirst's mission by leading a proactive, strategic approach to risk management, assessment, and mitigation. This role will be responsible for broadly leading the various insurance programs and needs including all resources that support placement, renewal, and marketing. The Director of Risk Management is expected to work collaboratively across departments to develop and execute best practices, including with Health and Safety, Legal and Human Resources. They will report to the Director of Legal Affairs and oversee the Claims Management department. Risk Management: * Chairs UniFirst's Safety and Claims Strategies Council to set and coordinate strategy around UniFirst's risk management approach * Leads and manages Claim Management staff to ensure a cohesive and coordinated both pre and post loss management approach across the business * Establishes best practices for risk identification, loss prevention and claims management * Manages and works with insurance underwriters/third party administrators (TPAs) to ensure effective follow up takes places regarding incident and/or preventative measures * Teams with TPAs and Legal on defense and/or settlement of claims * Partners with UniFirst's field and operations management to ensure adherence with established risk management protocols * Collaborates with Human Resources and Health and Safety to determine ways to reduce preventable injuries and associated costs * Orchestrates company-wide training/education relative to corporate risk management requirements and initiatives * Establishes risk management performance metrics and reports trends/progress of initiatives to senior management Insurance Strategy and Procurement: * Serves as the principal point of contact for UniFirst with external partners including insurance brokers, insurance advisors, carriers, underwriters, loss prevention engineers/inspectors, claims adjusters, TPAs and other service providers * Manages the marketing and purchasing of insurance for UniFirst including working with external brokers and insurance advisors on negotiating policy renewals and inceptions * Explores alternative risk or optional insurance funding mechanisms * Develops financial methods for managing risk, including application and purchase of multiple insurance programs * Reviews insurance coverage for adequacy and research options and fiscal viability (cost/budget analysis) and makes recommendations for additional coverage * Maintains insurance policies, attaching additions and endorsements as received, and manages appropriate archiving of insurance documentation * Develops and maintains best practices and appropriate exceptions for indemnification, hold harmless and insurance requirements * Assists as needed with review of insurance requirements in a variety of contracts, leases and other agreements * Oversees provision and collection of Certificate of Insurance process for customers and other organizations which includes verifying information is accurate and complete, including the correct language and limits, and following up with other departments for appropriate contacts Qualifications * Bachelor's Degree required (preferred in Finance, Accounting, or other Insurance Field) * 7+ years of experience in Corporate Risk Management, Insurance Brokerage, TPA or Insurance Company * Significant experience of implementing, overseeing and managing large casualty claim programs * Familiarity with industry compliance and regulations (e.g., OSHA) * Expert knowledge of risk assessment and controls, risk management, insurance principles, workers compensation, and loss control management * Knowledge of emergency management, business continuity practices, industry compliance standards and regulations * Experience developing risk management related training programs * Strong mathematical aptitude and computer skills including Microsoft Excel and Risk Management Information Systems * Strong skills in the following: * Leadership * Organization * Time-Management * Communication * Presentation * Analytical Preferred Qualifications: * Master's degree preferred * ARM, CPCU or other relevant industry designation preferred UniFirst is an equal opportunity employer.
