About the Position:

The Instructional Designer supports university faculty in using best practices of teaching and learning. The Instructional Designer will help guide the learning development process from analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. The Instructional Designer is responsible for working with faculty to successfully implement academic pedagogical principles and technology-enhanced learning into online courses. The Instructional Designer will have a strong background in education, technology, and pedagogy; as well as excellent interpersonal skills. This person needs to be organized, flexible, self-motivated, and able to maintain integrity and a good work ethic. The Instructional Designer reports to the Provost and works closely with faculty and the university Online Program Services Specialist.  This position is full-time and exempt.

  • Provide instructional design leadership, training, and assistance to faculty members as they prepare to teach or revise online or hybrid courses.

  • Consult with and provide individualized support to faculty in the integration of instructional technologies and the application of the appropriate pedagogy for the specific learning environment, whether online or hybrid.

  • Assist Department Chairs and Deans with evaluation of online and hybrid courses to improve student engagement and learning.

The successful candidate will be able to:

  • Develop learning objectives and determine how to align those objectives with appropriate assessment strategies to measure the desired learning outcomes.

  • Assist faculty in identifying effective ways of motivating and engaging students in activities designed for learning, including monitoring and optimizing their efforts toward student engagement.

  • Utilize existing and new multimedia software for instructional purposes.

  • Increase student collaboration through the use of online communications tools and group activities.

  • Maintain familiarity with the technology tools currently available for digital teaching and learning.

  • Provide faculty with assistance in adapting instructional materials created for one format to another (such as converting a classroom-based course to an online format).

  • Conduct user experience research to inform the development of accessible and inclusive digital products.

  • Develop design strategies for interactive learning environments.

  • Remain current with new developments in pedagogy and instructional technology.

  • Aid in the review of quality standards pertaining to course development and delivery.

  • Work closely with the Provost, Department Chairs, Deans, Online Program Services Specialist, and Online Committee to develop and evaluate faculty support procedures and the use of technology in the teaching and learning environment.

  • Master's Degree in Education or related field, preferably in Education or Instructional Design. Other degrees may be considered.

  • A minimum of two years' experience in curriculum development, teaching, or a closely related field, in an online environment.

  • Ability to create training experiences for faculty and students, including development and delivery of training in a virtual environment.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, learning management systems (e.g., Brightspace/D2L), content management, graphic editing software, storyboarding, multimedia, course authoring software, and other appropriate teaching/learning technologies.

  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.

  • Ability to effectively manage projects.

  • Self-motivation, along with the ability to sustain high levels of productivity while functioning well on a team.

  • Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks and projects, and schedule ongoing work appropriately.

  • Ability to meet regular deadlines and handle stressful situations with flexibility and good humor.

  • Excellent customer service skills.

  • Excellent problem-solving skills.

  • Evidence of online specific formal training, either in applicant's degree curriculum or from third-party providers (e.g., OSCQR, Quality Matters, Blackboard Exemplary Course Program, CSUQOLT)
