Who We Are

Bridge International Academies partners with governments, donors, and parents to ensure that every child has access to an education that develops her full potential and creates the foundation for prosperity for the country. In the past 9 years, Bridge has grown from serving 99 children in one community in Kenya, to serving more than 300,000 children every school day in 5 countries. We are dedicated to supporting teachers, empowering school leaders, and ensuring every child has the learning support needed to master the national syllabus and have the confidence to succeed in a competitive world. Each of our 5 country teams are supported through expertise and programming from additional offices in Hyderabad, India; Cambridge, MA, USA; and London, UK. We leverage experts, data, and technology in order to support and scale every aspect of quality education delivery. Bridge managed and supported schools are technology enabled and data driven to ensure accountability in the classroom for both teachers' performance and children's learning.

The Bridge model delivers significant learning outcomes at large scale by combining technology and customized learning materials. At Bridge, we believe innovation and technology can transform learning. Our model which uses technology to deliver thoroughly researched and carefully designed daily lesson guides to teachers in our academies is proven to increase learning outcomes for children.

Our mission is to provide our pupils with a life-changing education and we believe that every child should have a right to world-class education regardless of her family's income. Core to our approach is the conviction that every child can learn, as long as the school she attends is committed to her development and puts her needs to learn at the forefront of all decisions. We have seen teachers and children transform and excel in both government and private schools that we support and manage.

Instructional Design

The instructional design team at Bridge produces over 1000 printed books per year across 5 markets. The team produces close to 50,000 teacher guides.

About the Role

Instructional Design Writers are based in Boston, Nairobi, Hyderabad, and Lagos. This role is based in Boston, but will very likely include remote collaboration with teams overseas.

By joining as a writer, you join a team working to make a difference in the world. In the markets we serve, the number of pupils attending school is soaring, but the quality of most schools, according to international experts, is low. Writers that join our Instructional Design Department to invest time in producing quality learning materials to improve thousands of children's daily academic experience.

One core tenet of our approach to instruction at Bridge is providing extensive opportunities for pupil practice. That is, we're trying to make the pupil experience less "rote." We create "teacher guides" (daily lessons delivered by e-reader), textbooks, and other materials with that goal in mind -- all as a means to improving learning gains among pupils.

What You Will Do

  • Piece together Teacher Guides under the guidance of a supervisor with instructional expertise

  • Edit lesson materials (Teacher Guides, textbooks, exams) to ensure they are free of errors and inconsistencies

  • On occasion, write texts, questions, and activities for our textbooks

  • Learn and apply aspects of textbook production in the form of writing art specs and styling manuscripts

  • Pitch in where needed on miscellaneous projects to help with other academics departments or other instructional design teams

What You Should Have

  • A bachelor's degree in Education or a related field

  • Excellent communication skills

  • Flexibility, ability to process and respond to new information quickly, and excellent attention to detail

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint

  • Strong writing and editing skills

  • Ability to receive and effectively apply feedback

  • High degree of focus and organization

  • Ability to find value in the big and small tasks alike

You're also

  • A detailed doer You have a track record of getting things done. You're organized and responsive. You take ownership of every idea you touch and execute it to a fine level of detail, setting targets, engaging others, and doing whatever it takes to get the job done. You can multi-task dozens of such projects at once and never lose sight of the details. Likely, you have some experience in a startup or social enterprise.
  • A creative problem-solver Growing any enterprise from scratch comes with massive and constant challenges. On top of that, Bridge works in often challenging, low-resource communities and runs on fees averaging just $6 a month per pupil. You need to be flexible and ready to get everything done effectively, quickly, and affordably with the materials at hand. Every dollar you spend is a dollar our customers, who live on less than $2 a day, will have to pay for.
  • A customer advocate Our customers these families living on less than $2 a day per person never leave your mind. You know them, get them, have shared a meal with them (or would be happy to in the future). Every decision you make considers their customer benefit, experience, and value.
