Duties
Provides a positive, safe and academically challenging learning environment for all students through the use of district approved curriculum by collaborating with teachers.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES: Listed below but not limited to
Planning and Preparation:
Acts as instructional leader in the development, implementation, and coordination of literacy instruction across the curriculum by guiding, directing, and modeling for staff
Demonstrates knowledge of current trends in specialty area and professional development
Demonstrates knowledge of the school's programs
Researches, analyzes, and disseminates current research and resources on instructional practices that link with the school improvement goals
Researches and understands the specific literacy demands of each discipline as well as opportunities for incorporating literacy practices, and assist teachers with implementing strategies that allow students to become content literate
Uses both data and analysis of students' learning to assist classroom teachers in making decisions to improve instructional practices and interventions
Recommends literacy assessments and helps teachers learn to administer them, to interpret them, and design instruction from the information gained
Establishes goals for the instructional support program appropriate to the setting and the teachers served
Demonstrates knowledge of resources, both within and beyond the school and district
Plans the instructional support program, integrated with the overall school program
Develops a plan to evaluate the instructional support program

Establishes clear procedures for teachers to gain access to instructional support
Meets with teachers from all content areas to lead collaborative, departmental dialogue concerning literacy and effective teaching
Delivery of Service:
Collaborates with teachers in the design of instructional units and lessons
Engages teachers in learning new instructional skills
Shares expertise with staff
Provides appropriate individualized help and feedback to support literacy efforts of all personnel
Facilitates and guides a team of literacy leaders from all content areas to support a systemic approach to literacy and instructional support
Acts as an agent of job-embedded professional development by creating professional learning communities through collegial interactions and collaboration with individuals, small groups, and whole staff
Works with individual teachers within his/her classroom to teach and model effective literacy strategies and techniques
Locates resources for teachers to support instructional improvement
Organizes and maintains the inventory in leveled book rooms, along with supplemental resources, and supports teachers by modeling the use of these resources
Demonstrates flexibility and responsiveness
Professional Responsibilities:
Attends required meetings and school activities
Is in attendance on a regular basis
Maintains and submits records as required
Promptly communicates with assistant superintendent, building principal, teachers, and/or parents when necessary
Annually evaluates the effectiveness of literacy professional development program and reports to the Assistant Superintendent
Serves as an active member of the school's literacy leadership team to support a systemic paradigm of literacy support
Shares responsibility for being informed and informing the public about the school's literacy program
Communicates with families about student progress and is available as needed to respond to family concerns
Maintains relationships with colleagues that are characterized by mutual support and cooperation
Coordinates work with other instructional specialists
Seeks out opportunities for professional development to enhance content knowledge and pedagogical skill
Displays high standards of honesty, integrity and confidentiality in interactions with colleagues, students, and the public
Reflects on practices
Participates in the district and building's professional community
Complies with school and district regulations
Qualifications
Education/Certifications:
Preferred Master's Degree in reading and/or curriculum instruction
Preferred teaching endorsement in English and/or Language Arts
A strong undergraduate and graduate scholastic record
Standard Illinois Teaching Certificate required
Knowledge of current curriculum, instructional trends, school improvement process, technology use, and student assessment systems
Special Knowledge/Skills/Requirements:
Effective oral and written communication and interpersonal skills
Ability to read, learn and interpret rules and regulations
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
Ability to establish rapport with students, parents and staff
Salary/Benefits
Base Rate: $44,544-with Bachelor's degree and no experience
