In the 2024-25 school year, the KIPP Jacksonville region will be comprised of four schools educating more than 3,000 students, kindergarten through twelfth grade in the North and West sides of Jacksonville, Florida.

  • KIPP Impact Academy: Kindergarten- 4th grade, 6th- 8th grade

  • KIPP VOICE Academy: Kindergarten- 8th grade

  • KIPP Bessie Coleman Academy: Kindergarten- 8th grade

  • KIPP Bold City High School: 9th- 12th grade

For the current school year, teachers at KIPP Jacksonville Public Schools work the following hours Monday through Friday and may have occasional meetings or special school events outside of these hours. Hours for teachers and students may vary slightly by school.

  • K-8 Staff: 7:30am- 4:30pm K-8 Students: 8:00am- 3:30pm, Wednesday K-8 dismissal is at 1:30pm

  • High School Staff: 6:45am- 3:45pm, High School Students: 7:15am- 2:30pm, Wednesday High School dismissal is at 12:30pm.

Every Wednesday is a student early release day, which allows teachers to participate in weekly professional development and content team meetings. *This doesn't include Wellness Wednesdays when all staff leave at student dismissal.

Job Description

Title: High School Reading Coach

Position Overview:

The Reading Coach is a year-round, certified, school-based position that is responsible for coaching their school's teachers in English Language Arts education. They observe, give feedback, model lessons, and support their caseload of teachers. The projected caseload would be 5 teachers. They would also collaborate with the Manager of the Baker Teaching Fellowship and the Managers of our Aspiring Teachers Program to support any fellows or guest educators in these reading positions. This coach would also collaborate with school-based administrators who evaluate teachers, in addition to partnering with any other teachers that help support high school reading and ELA, including learning specialists or interventionists. The Reading Coach will also lead professional development for teachers and collaborate with peers and the academic team across the region. In the event a teacher is out, the coach may be asked to lead English or Reading instruction or to model key lessons. They must be certified to support students if needed.

Success in this role is measured by positively impacting Reading/ELA data for their school and for teacher retention of the teachers they coach.

As a school-based leader, this position is year-round and performs duties as assigned by their Principal. Typical hours for school-based leaders are 6:45 a.m. to 3:45 pm Monday through Friday and there may be occasional meetings, special school events, or commitments that fall outside of these hours. Student hours are typically 7:15 a.m.- 2:30 p.m. Every Wednesday is a student early release day (12:30 p.m.), which allows teachers to participate in weekly professional development.

This position is funded by Title 1 resources.

Specific Position Duties:

  • Own the high school math English teams in collaboration with the regional academic team
  • Conduct walk-throughs specifically focused on urgent academic monitoring and respond to observation data in the moment through real time coaching.
  • Pull grade-level or school-level trends in data and adjust instruction and coaching accordingly
  • Track all data, including data meetings, lesson planning feedback, and observation feedback in the regional performance platform
  • In the event a teacher needs additional support in classroom culture to better achieve academic goals, the coach would collaborate with a school-based administrator on support for classroom management routines and procedures that support English instruction
  • Own their own professional development and growth by leveraging lifelines within the region and the broader KIPP network, asking for and implementing feedback weekly, and pursuing additional professional development and growth opportunities both within and outside the region.
  • Establish and uphold school culture norms and hold teachers and scholars accountable to norms and expectations, both in classrooms and in shared spaces.
  • Embody mindsets that work towards equity for our scholars and staff and model person-first thinking
  • Work with the school-based leadership team to accomplish the school's goals
  • Knowledge of best practices and instruction of high school English to lead professional development
  • Other duties as outlined by school or regional leadership teams

Qualifications

COMPENSATION

  • The starting salary for this position is $53,000.

  • This position would be eligible for a stipend for leading content team(s) in the region

  • This position would be eligible for instructional milage stipend (the most recent stipend amount for New to KIPP staff in this category was $7,000)*
