Santa Maria-Bonita School District INSTRUCTIONAL ASSISTANT II - SPECIAL EDUCATION BASIC FUNCTION Under the direction of a certificated teacher, assist in providing instruction to individual or small groups of students experiencing special learning needs; monitor and report student progress regarding behavior and performance; perform a variety of clerical and supportive duties related to classroom activities. REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES Assist a certificated teacher in providing instruction to students in an assigned special education program such as Special Day Class (SDC) or Resource Specialist Program (RSP)E; tutor individual students and small groups of students with special learning needsE; reinforce and follow up learning and training activitiesE; prepare lessons as directed by the teacherE; assist in the preparation of a variety of instructional materials and learning aidesE; rephrase materials and explain instructions and wordsE; administer, monitor and score a variety of testsE; assist in the management of student behavior through the use of positive reinforcement strategies and techniquesE; observe and control behavior of students according to approved proceduresE; assist in the shaping of social behaviorsE; perform a variety of clerical duties such as preparing, typing and duplicating instructional materials, scoring papers and recording gradesE; maintain student records and files including confidential student record informationE; provide support to the teacher by setting up work areas, displays and exhibitsE; operate and assist students in the operation of audio-visual and educational training equipmentE; administer medication in accordance with specific medical instructionE; perform routine first aid which may include assisting students experiencing seizures or respiratory problemsE; confer with teachers concerning programs and materials to meet the individual needs of special education studentsE; accompany mainstreamed students to regular classrooms as assignedE; provide individual instructional assistanceE; monitor and assist students with special learning needs in drill, practice and study activitiesE; direct students into safe learning activities and functionsE; maintain an orderly, attractive, and positive learning environmentE; assist in the development of communication skills with students experiencing language and hearing disordersE; direct group activities of students as assignedE; assist in monitoring lunchroom and playground activities as assignedE; accompany students on field trips as assignedE; maintain the confidentiality of student records and information according to established guidelinesE; assure the health and safety of students by following health and safety practices and proceduresE; participate in staff meetings, inservice training programs and parent conferences as assignedE; perform related duties as assigned. KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES Knowledge of: Child guidance principles and practices related to students with special needs; Problems and concerns of students with special needs; Basic subjects taught in District schools including arithmetic, reading, writing, grammar and spelling; Safe practices in classroom activities; Basic instructional methods and techniques; Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary; Oral and written communication skills; Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy; Basic recordkeeping techniques; Classroom procedures and appropriate student conduct; Operation of office machines and keyboard equipment. Ability to: Assist with instruction and related activities in a classroom or assigned learning environment; Reinforce instruction to students with learning disabilities, language, communication and behavioral problems; Perform clerical duties related to classroom activities; Operate and demonstrate the use of laboratory materials and equipment; Understand and follow oral and written directions; Learn the procedures, functions and limitations of assigned duties; Communicate effectively with children and adults; Read, interpret, apply and explain rules, regulations, policies and procedures; Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others; Work confidentially with discretion; Communicate effectively both orally and in writing; Understand and work within scope of authority; Supervise and discipline students according to approved policies and procedures; Operate instructional and office equipment. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE Any combination equivalent to: Graduation from High School supplemented by coursework in child growth and development and instructional technology and one year of paid or volunteer experience working with students of various age levels requiring a specialized learning environment. WORKING CONDITIONS Environment: Indoor classroom environment. Physical Abilities: Sitting or standing for extended periods of time; Bending at the waist and kneeling or crouching to assist students; Hearing and speaking to exchange information and make presentations; Seeing to read assignments and to monitor student activities; Lifting moderately heavy objects.
