Summary of Duties: Under supervision, works with identified special education students in Special Day Class (SDC), Resource Specialist Programs (RSP) or regular classrooms in small groups and/or on an individual basis to provide instructional, reinforcement and follow up support in learning activities; assists in the preparation, modification, and implementation of lesson plans, instructional materials and learning aids as directed by the teacher.

Confers with teachers concerning student progress and to determine programs, activities and materials to meet individual needs of special education students and, as directed by the teacher, arranges for Individual Education Plan (IEP) meetings with parents; prepares and maintains student files and records as necessary, including confidential records and medical information. May make minor adjustments on special equipment, such as wheel chairs, crutches, braces, standing tables and gurneys; may obtain food from school cafeteria or kitchens, serve food and feed students or help them feed themselves. May assist students with toileting, diapering and personal hygiene.

May be required to administer medication and perform simple medical procedures under the direction of the nurse and with prior training by the nurse; performs other related duties as assigned. Education and experience: equivalent to graduation from high school, plus complete two years of higher education study or obtain an Associate's degree or higher*; good general background and work experience, including one year of paid or volunteer experience working with children requiring a more specialized learning environment. Knowledge of: basic needs and behavior of children and adolescents; concepts of child growth and developmental behavioral characteristics; student behavior management strategies and techniques; appropriate English usage, punctuation, spelling, and grammar; and basic arithmetical concepts.

Ability to: demonstrate an understanding, patient, and receptive attitude toward students who exhibit physical and learning needs of a specialized nature; communicate effectively in oral and written form; learn to utilize a variety of appropriate instructional materials and procedures; perform routine clerical tasks; and understand and carry out oral and written directions; and perform related duties as required. Physical Requirements: Ability to safely lift, carry, push and/or pull weights up to 120 pounds with lifting devices, lifting belts or other accommodations; ability to frequently bend at the waist and knees, kneel and squat; ability to walk, stand and sit for extended periods at a time; ability to reach above the shoulders.

Other Requirements: Incumbents during the probationary period are required to obtain and to subsequently maintain a valid First Aid and CPR Certificate issued by an authorized agency and provide proof of certification to the Office of Human Resources.

The work schedule is a set schedule M-F. Depending on the position it will be between 3.5 - 6 hours per day.Equivalent to graduation from high school, good general background and work experience, including one year of paid or volunteer experience working with school-age children desired.One of the following is required:Completion of two years of study at an institution of higher education (college level) or forty-eight (48) semester units, including a math and an English class (units need to be passed with a grade of C or higher); ORobtain an Associate's degree or higherORPass an assessment that demonstrates knowledge of and the ability to assist in teaching reading, writing, and mathematics OR reading, writing and mathematics readiness.

The district offers this test monthly. You are given two hours to complete the test.

If you are submitting transcripts in lieu of the test they must be submitted with the application. Unofficial can be submitted but transcripts must be legible and show proof of forty-eight (48) semester units, including a math and an English class; OR a conferred date for an associate's (or higher) degree ACCOMMODATIONS:

A physical examination clearance is required for certain positions for the district. All candidates with a record of convictions must indicate such on the confidential data form, which is attached to the job application. A record of conviction will not automatically disqualify an applicant from employment, but a failure to list all convictions may result in disqualification or dismissal.
