Instructional Assistant to work supporting students during whole and small group instruction as well as working with individual children throughout the day. Responsibilities include supervising lunch and recess and accompanying students to specials (art, music). Experience working with young children is necessary and an understanding of developmentally appropriate practices is desirable. Other tasks as needed to support classroom instruction under the supervision of the classroom teacher.

School principal.


Two years of college credit OR Associates Degree or higher.


In accordance with the Agreement Between Cheshire Board of Education and CSEA/SEIU Local 2001 in Behalf of the Cheshire Instructional Assistants and Teacher Assistants.

Essential Performance Responsibilities * Follows Board of Education and State of Connecticut health policy and practices, to ensure a healthy school environment. * Develops and maintains effective nurse/school and parent communication. * Develops and administers school health programs. * Researches and provides information on appropriate action to be taken regarding current trends and proposed new legislation/regulations in school health. * Participate in state health-related screening programs and follow-ups. * Follows communicable diseases and coordination of emergency medical situations within schools or the school district (including the outbreak of flu epidemics) per Health Department and school medical advisor. * Follows emergency medical care and routine injury/illness care policies, protocols, and facilities established by Board of Education and State guidelines. * Provides medical knowledge to special education programs and families. * Provides medical knowledge to school physical education and athletic and health education programs. * Provides advice and recommendations regarding maintaining a healthy work environment to students and staff. * Assists in providing training or staff development programs related the school health and medical issues. Equipment Uses medical equipment as needed, and personal computers. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities * Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, symptoms, diagnoses, treatments, first aid, illnesses and injuries, nutrition, and related areas. * Ability to provide care for ill or injured students and advise to seek medical care as needed. * Ability to convey appropriate medical information to school district staff or medical professionals to ensure a proper maintenance in the school setting. * Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide, and perform arithmetic operations as needed for position. * Ability to understand, apply and use personal computers and software applications (e.g., Word, Excel, Powerpoint, the Internet, Outlook, electronic mail). * Ability to describe orally and in writing school health services provided, issues and concerns regarding school health. * Ability to report work orally and in writing to supervisors as required. * Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, staff and others contacted in the course of work. Safety Requirements * Adheres to all applicable professional safety standards and practices in the nursing field, including requirements set forth in federal and state law, and Occupational Safety and Health regulations. * Implements Board Policy regarding Blood Borne Pathogens and other Board policies regarding the medical or health care of employees and students. Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards * Work in standard school building environment. * Exposure to body secretions, blood borne pathogens, medicine and medicinal supplies, illnesses and diseases. Qualifications Profile * Certification/License: RN required (BSN preferred) * Valid license to practice in Connecticut * Current certification in Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Automatic External Defibrillator (AED). Education/Experience * Registered Nurse from an accredited college or university. * Experience 10 years or more of hospital/community nursing experience. * Experience in school health area relating to pediatrics.
