Salary Range: $17.00 - $20.68

Reports to: Building Principal or Designee

Please note that this position is 183 days with 6 paid holidays, paid sick leave and paid flexible personal leave (3 days per year). If hired after the start of the school year, days and leave are pro-rated. Job Summary:

The Health Assistant provides a variety of health related, clerical services to assure safe and meaningful participation of students who require medical support in school. The Health Assistant performs work of a recurring nature with established health practices and procedures under close supervision of a district school nurse and/or an administrator. The nature of the work requires strict adherence to policies, procedures, regulations, and laws. The incumbent makes independent decisions following student health plans. The incumbent interfaces daily with students, parents, colleagues, school administrative staff, and school employees. Because this job involves frequent interaction with students, the position requires a high level of professional decorum, calm, and the ability to act as a role model to young people.

Essential Job Functions:

Administer medication to students.

Provide delegated health care tasks for students with chronic health problems (including but not limited to catheterization, insulin administration, and gastrostomy tube feedings).

Provide authorized first aid to students.

Collect immunization data.

Collect health data as directed by the district nurse.

Maintain medically related equipment as directed by the district school nurse.

Assures that students' health needs are monitored and met in the school and/or on the bus.

Consults with the district school nurse.

Assists with and supervises non-nursing student activities as time allows, including bus loading, recess, lunch, field trips, academic support, behavior support and activities of daily living.

Organize and implement regionally based district health screenings.

Must be able to record data.

Must have knowledge of practices and procedures for medication administration and medical care delivery.

Must be able to make independent decisions in response to the strict following of the health plans of students.

Serve as a conduit between the student and the school nurse by sharing vital information and updates.

Must have knowledge of work hazards and safety precautions related to the work.

Skills/Ability to:

Work with accuracy and attention to detail to meet deadlines.

Understand and execute oral and written instructions, policies and procedures.

Operate and maintain equipment related to medical services.

Prepare accurate records and reports.

Responsible for being familiar with the school/district policies and procedures which govern the work.

Other Job Functions:

Maintains classroom equipment, materials, and students' files, records, etc. for the purpose of ensuring availability of items as may be required.

Performs record keeping and basic clerical functions, scheduling, copying, etc. for the purpose of supporting the teacher in maintaining student files and preparing instructional materials as requested.

Assists other personnel as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities.

Confers, under the supervision of the teacher, with teachers, parents, and/or appropriate community agency personnel for the purpose of assisting in evaluation of students' progress and/or implementing of students' objectives. Exercises discretion and assures protection of student confidentiality consistent with the direction and guidance of staff, administrators, and school/district policies and procedures.

Participates in various meetings and professional development activities for the purpose of sharing information and/or improving one's skills/knowledge.

Assists with the transition of students, including supervision of students to and from the bus, supervision of loading and unloading of buses, and supervision of students to and from classes.

Performs other tasks as assigned.

Essential Job Requirements- Qualifications:

Education Required:Completed associates or higher degree, completed at least two years of study at an institution of higher education (72 college quarter hours or more) or met a rigorous standard of quality and can demonstrate, through a formal state or local academic assessment, knowledge of and ability to assist in instructing reading, writing, and mathematics.

In lieu of above, must have completed High school diploma/GED and one of the following

Completion of a one-year certificate program for Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) and, completing one-year training and/or experience as a medical assistant, or

Pass the ParaPro Assessment upon hire and successfully complete the training provided by nursing staff.

Current First Aid, CPR, and AED certification.

Ability to successfully complete training for Medication Administration, Training for Emergency Glucagon Providers, Bloodborne Pathogens, and Treatment of Severe Allergic Reaction.

Language Skills- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedural manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of students, staff, and parents.

Reasoning Ability- Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.

Other skills and abilities- Works well with others. Focuses on solving conflict; maintains confidentiality; listens to others without interrupting; keeps emotions under control; remains open to others' ideas, and contributes to building a positive team spirit. Works well in the presence of children.

Computer skills to include use of word processing programs, database programs and the Google Suite of products.

Physical Demands:The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to walk; sit, and use hands for fine manipulation, handle or feel and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to stand and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and peripheral vision.

Terms of Employment: 9+ months. Performance of this position will be evaluated annually in accordance with Board policy on evaluation of classified staff.
