Position Description:

The Walter P. Reuther Library of Wayne State University seeks creative, curious, and service-oriented applicants for the full-time, two-year term position of Instruction and Outreach Archivist.

Reporting to the Reuther Library Director, the position will lead instruction and outreach activities that engage constituent communities and promote the use and development of archival collections. The successful candidate will also work closely with peer Archivists, Librarians, and University staff and faculty to incorporate primary sources into classroom instruction and present coordinated, comprehensive information literacy instruction to targeted student communities. This two-year role will be provided with dedicated peer mentoring to aid in onboarding, development of pedagogical and research support skills, and familiarity with the Reuther archival collections.

The position is a 1.0 FTE, regular, 12-month, benefits-eligible appointment as Academic Staff, and an AAUP-AFT represented position with eligibility for promotion. The successful candidate will be hired at the rank of Archivist I or II with a salary range from $55,000-$65,000 according to qualifications and experience. This is a majority in-person position based at the Walter P. Reuther Library. This two-year appointment is contingent on ongoing funding.

Reuther Library, Archives of Labor and Urban Affairs is the largest labor archives in North America, and is home to the collections of numerous unions and labor- related organizations, as well as those documenting the political and community life of urban and metropolitan Detroit, the civil rights movement in Michigan and nationally, and women's struggles in the workplace. The Reuther Library is also home of the Wayne State University Archives, established by the Board of Governors in 1958 in recognition of the importance and permanent value of the University's official files, records, and documents.

Essential Functions:

  • Prepare and lead archival instruction for the Reuther Library, including collaborating with faculty on course-aligned archival instruction and learning outcomes

  • Conduct outreach to promote Reuther Library collections and services to Wayne State faculty, students, and staff as well as the Detroit community and the general public

  • Conduct Reuther Library tours

  • Collaborate with Library and University staff to create comprehensive instructional programs for students to promote information (including primary source) literacy

  • Contribute to the development of learning and promotional materials

  • Collaborate with Events and Exhibit Committee to develop programs and exhibits

  • Serve as Reuther Library liaison to WSU and Detroit-area faculty and K-12 teachers

  • Collect statistics and conduct assessment documenting instruction and outreach activities

  • Participate in shared decision-making for Library planning, resource management, and program and policy development

  • Represent the Library through active participation in professional associations and University committees

  • Participate in Reading Room services

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master's degree from an accredited institution in library/information science, archival administration, or a related field, with graduate study in archival theory and methods and/or experience leading to demonstrated proficiency with the methods and theories of archival administration

  • Experience using archival collection management systems, such as ArchivesSpace

  • One to two years of experience working with archives or special collections

  • Demonstrated instructional experience

  • Demonstrated knowledge of research and teaching trends, methods, and best practices in archives

  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate and work effectively within and across organizational boundaries in a diverse organization and with a wide variety of users

  • Commitment to fostering an equitable and inclusive workplace, and an ability to work effectively with diverse stakeholder communities

  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, written, and oral communication skills

  • Demonstrated initiative, ability to self-direct, and a commitment to innovation, creativity, and excellence

  • Ability to meet expectations for promotion as part of the Reuther Library academic staff in the areas of job performance, professional achievement, and service

Preferred qualifications:

Experience working with digital and physical collections in a classroom context Coursework or experience in instructional assessment Subject knowledge in one or more of the Reuther Library's primary collecting areas, such as U.S. labor history, African American history, civil rights and social movement history, or the history of metropolitan and urban Detroit
