Central Washington University is recruiting an Instruction and Classroom Support Technician 3 to join our Engineering Technologies, Safety, and Construction (ETCS) team in Ellensburg, Washington. The Engineering Technologies, Safety, and Construction (ETSC) Department offers Bachelor of Science degree programs in construction management, industrial/mechanical/electronics engineering technology areas, safety and health management, risk, insurance, and safety management, and technology education. Programs are based on a foundation of technical courses, math and science topics, verbal and written communications, and CWU's general education coursework requirement. Curriculum content depends heavily on a hands-on, as opposed to a highly abstract, approach to the subject matter. The department oversees roughly 60,000 square feet of laboratory spaces and approximately $4 million of instructional machines and equipment. Laboratory spaces include: metals lab, woods lab, thermos/fluids, metallurgy, electronics, construction, safety, welding, and foundry.

The ETSC Department is administratively located in the College of Education and Professional Studies (CEPS) and offers a complete array of programs and courses at the Ellensburg campus. The Role:

The Instruction and Classroom Support Technician supports the laboratory educational objectives of the Engineering Technologies, Safety, and Construction (ETSC) Department. The position coordinates instructional support activities; manages equipment, supplies, budgets, and purchasing to support the instructional needs to the department; and provides teaching assistance for laboratory components of technical courses in consultation with the chair. All employees are expected to support CWU's commitment to diversity and to bring and support inclusion into the university environment.

Job Duties

Instructional Support:

  • Provides senior-level instructional support in the form of supporting laboratory components of technical classes.

  • Supports the student experience by coordinating and assisting with laboratory experiments, projects, and exercises.

  • Assists faculty with laboratory experiments for ETSC department courses, including equipment requirements and computer interfaces, to best meet the instructional needs of the faculty and students.

  • Prepares laboratory spaces and equipment or retrieves laboratory equipment from storage for prior to upcoming class laboratories.

  • May consult with faculty, design, manufacture, and test equipment used for lecture demonstrations or laboratory experiments.

  • In consultation with faculty, estimates equipment needs for laboratories; evaluates and recommends the purchase, fabrication, or modification of equipment.

  • May lead laboratory portion of selected classes.

Maintenance:

  • Inspects, assembles, fabricates, calibrates, troubleshoots, maintains, and/or repairs laboratory devices, hardware, and machines.

  • Performs mechanical maintenance for instructional equipment.

  • Coordinates the functional and safe use of laboratory facilities, equipment, and storage to meet the department's instructional needs.

Budget:

  • Prepares, monitors and forecasts course support budgets, prepares cost estimates, projects equipment, software, parts, and maintenance needs.

  • Coordinates the expenditures from various budget lines that are used in support of the ETSC instructional laboratories using and reconciling the Purchasing Card and CWU financial system

Lead:

  • Assigns and checks work and provides training to undergraduate lab assistants who assemble lab course materials, performs equipment maintenance tasks, and provides general tasks such as clean up, supporting classes, and inventory management.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Specialized professional training, knowledge, and skills in machining, fabrication, welding, carpentry, plumbing, computer hardware and/or software functions OR closely related fields.

  • Demonstrated commitment to a safe and healthy learning environment.

  • Strong oral and written communication skills.

  • Ability to relate to the public, students, staff, and faculty in an instructional environment.

  • Ability to prioritize work and work with frequent interruptions.

  • Demonstrated willingness and/or experience working with students and/or co-workers from a wide range of abilities, backgrounds, and experiences.

  • OR applicable combination of education and/or experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the essential functions of the position.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience working in an academic environment.

  • Strong industrial experience or related education.

  • Project lead experience.

  • Budgeting experience.

  • Experience working with diverse groups to come to consensus on instructional, budgeting, and priority requirements.

  • Bachelor's Degree in an Engineering Technologies, Safety, and Construction course of study or a closely related field or combination of education and commensurable experience.

  • Life experiences that demonstrate an ability to contribute to CWU's commitment to inclusion and diversity.

  • Potential to mentor and educate students who will serve diverse populations.

Pay, Benefits, & Work Schedule

Salary: This position is based on the range 47 of the Washington State Classification Listing, which has a minimum annual salary of $49,116 and maximum annual salary of $66,012. In accordance with RCW 49.58.110, the above salary reflects the full salary range for this position. Individual placement within the range is based on the candidate's current experience, education, skills, and abilities related to the position.

Schedule/Appointment: Monday - Friday, 8:00am-5:00pm (1 hour lunch) / PSE Bargaining Unit 4

Working Conditions: Work is performed in office and laboratory settings on the Ellensburg campus. There are daily in-person interactions with students, faculty, staff and community members. It is essential to be able to meet the physical demands of remaining at a desk/computer workstation for prolonged periods of time, using repetitive arm, hand, and finger movements. Some stooping, kneeling, bending, crouching, lifting, walking, carrying or moving of objects associated with the maintenance of equipment or experiments is required. Standard shop safety practices must be maintained to provide a safe workspace. The job is physically demanding, lifting heavy weights (up to 50 pounds) may be required.
