General Statement of Duties

Performs inspections to enforcing City-County ordinances and regulations relating to the installation and operation of electrical systems and equipment; does related work as required.

Distinguishing Features of the Class

This is skilled inspections work involving securing compliance with City-County ordinances and regulations governing the installation and operation of electrical systems and equipment to protect public health and safety. The work is performed under the general direction and supervision of the Building Official but considerable leeway is granted for the exercise of independent judgement and initiative. The nature of the work performed requires that an employee in this class establish and maintain close cooperative working relationships with the Building Official, Planning Director, Public Works Director, other employees in the Planning Department, real estate developers, building contractors, architects, property owners and the general public.


Examples of Essential Work (Illustrative Only)

  • Examines, reviews, approves, disapproves and suggests modifications in plans and specifications for electrical construction, alteration and repairs;

  • Makes inspections of new and existing wiring and electrical installations in residences, businesses and public and other buildings for conformance with City-County electrical codes and regulations;

  • Checks plans and construction to see that electrical work complies with ordinances and regulations and recommends methods for improvement;

  • Checks existing wiring installations prior to their use for installations of special electrical devices in order to determine the capacity of installations to carry the additional load without danger;

  • Performs electrical analyses of existing and proposed systems;

  • Perform routine electrical maintenance work in Butte-Silver Bow Government Facilities;

  • Receives complaints of electrical code and related violations and investigates or refers complaint to appropriate persons for response;

  • Instructs electricians concerning the proper location of wiring centers;

  • Issues electrical permits;

  • Attends meetings, conferences and workshops as requested and authorized;

  • Performs related work as required.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Comprehensive knowledge of City-County and other electrical codes adopted by the City-County;

  • Thorough knowledge of the methods and practices involving in constructing, installing, maintaining and operating a wide variety of electrical installations, equipment and appliances;

  • Thorough knowledge of possible defects and faults in electrical wiring and appliances and of standard testing devices and effective corrective measures;

  • Ability to detect and locate defective electrical wiring during construction or installation when defects are most easily found and remedied;

  • Skill in reviewing and understanding construction and wiring plans, blueprints, drawings and diagrams;

  • Ability to communicate well with others both orally and in writing, using both technical and non-technical language;

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other City-County employees, supervisory personnel, real estate developers, contractors, architects, engineers, property owners and the general public;

  • Ability to prepare accurate and reliable reports containing findings, conclusions and recommendations;

  • Ability to operate a personal computer using standard word processing, spreadsheet and database applications appropriate to assigned duties;

  • Ability to use logical and creative thought processes to develop solutions according to written specifications and/or oral instructions;

  • Ability to perform a wide variety of electrical inspection tasks with accuracy and speed under the pressure of time-sensitive deadlines;

  • Ability to quickly learn and put to use new skills and knowledge brought about by rapidly changing information and/or technology;

  • Ingenuity and inventiveness in the performance of assigned tasks.


Acceptable Experience and Training

  • Graduation from High School, supplemented by additional training in electricity and electrical inspections; and

  • Considerable experience as a journey-level electrician, preferably including work on a wide variety of construction and installation projects; or

  • Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform the work.

Required Special Qualifications

  • Possession of a current State Electrical License;

  • Completion of continuing electrical education as required;

  • Ability to pass a background check;

  • Possession of a valid Driver's License issued by the State of Montana.

  • Must be a resident of Butte-Silver Bow during employment according to Butte-Silver Bow

  • Ordinance. See below:

  • "2.08.010 Residence during employment.

  • From and after October 1, 1979, all employees of the local government of Butte-Silver Bow shall be bona fide residents within the boundaries of Butte-Silver Bow during the period of their employment by the government of Butte-Silver Bow.

Essential Physical Abilities

  • Clarity of speech and hearing, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to communicate well with building and zoning inspection personnel, other City-County personnel, property and business owners, real estate developers, contractors, architects, engineers and the general public both in person and by telephone;

  • Sufficient vision, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to make comprehensive visual inspections of construction projects, review a wide variety of written and drawn materials and observe electrical installations and corrective measures;

  • Sufficient manual dexterity, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to physically inspect construction projects for compliance with electrical codes;

  • Sufficient personal mobility, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to operate a motor vehicle and visit and inspect construction projects throughout the City-County in all forms of weather.
