DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Performs daily life safety Inspections for existing commercial buildings, does necessary research, types thorough inspection reports, and completes all computer entries within allotted time frames. Meets and communicates with the general public, contractors and technical professionals to respond to inquires.
Identifies problem areas and recommends solutions. Performs investigations by conducting research on properties and owners, issuing notices, and possibly serving violation citations. Performs record keeping activities, maintains daily logs/time sheets and records/maintains photographs taken during inspections/investigations.
Prepares and submits various technical reports. Works well directly with other members of an inspection team or independently with little supervision. Performs other duties as assigned.
WORKING CONDITIONS
This position routinely requires lifting of moderately heavy items. Such as computers or records or records boxes (up to 40 pounds) and/or very long period of walking on rough surfaces on a routine basis. There are routine discomforts from exposure to moderate heat, cold, moisture/wetness and unpleasant air conditions
This is a Department of Houston Public Works Emergency Management Position at the Tier III Level.EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Requires High School Diploma or G.E.D. and up to 18 months of education or training in the area of inspection to be performed.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Two (2) years of journey level experience related to the area of inspection to be performed are required.
LICENSE REQUIREMENTS
Requires a valid Texas Driver's License and be in compliance with the City of Houston policy on driving (AP 2-2).Preference may be given to candidates with experience in working with electronic locks and reading plans. Preference may be given to candidates with a valid ICC Inspector certification.
Preference may be given to candidates with commercial and construction experience. Preference may be given to candidates that are Certified Fire Inspectors. Preference may be given to candidates with experience with investigations and/or issuing citations
Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6.SELECTION/SKILLS TESTS REQUIRED: None
However, the department may administer a skills assessment test.

SALARY INFORMATION
Factors used in determining the salary offered include the candidate's qualifications as well as the pay rates of other employees in this classification.
PAY GRADE 18
INCENTIVES/AWARDS
Retention: Eligible for award of up to $3000.00, upon completion of 24 months employment
Relocation: Eligible for incentive of up to $1000.00, upon submission of qualifying receipts
Certification: Eligible for annual incentives of up to $3900.00, upon acquisition of eligible certification
Step Increase: Salary adjusted by 3.1% upon start of 3rd year of employment
Salary adjusted by 2.8% upon start of 5th year of employment
