The Inspector is responsible for maintaining the mechanical integrity of fixed equipment and piping in the refinery by performing required inspections at timely intervals. Inspectors examine, inspect, collect information, and evaluate inspection data. They also provide recommendations under the guidance of an Inspection Supervisor or Chief Inspector.

Responsibilities May Include:

  • Performing and coordinating required inspections of piping and equipment

  • Identifying equipment and piping needing repair and/or replacement

  • Issuing welding and inspection requirements for new and replacement equipment

  • Performing positive material identification on new and replacement alloy components

  • Choosing the correct non-destructive examination (NDE) technology and applications

  • Directing NDE crews performing ultrasonic and radiographic testing, and other inspection technologies

  • Reviewing X-ray and other NDE data

  • Reviewing engineering packages for new installations

  • Participating in turnaround inspections

  • Approving repairs as well as supplying QA/QC on all work completed within their area/zone

  • Writing detailed inspection and turnaround reports and maintaining files and documentation

  • Presenting findings to the operations, mechanical, technical, and management teams

  • Updating equipment inspection records

Required Qualifications:

  • Legally authorized to work in the job posting country

  • Must have a valid driver's license

  • Must be at least 18 years of age

  • Highschool Diploma or GED equivalent

  • 5 or more years of direct experience as an inspector

  • 5 or more years of experience in the petroleum, chemical, or similar industry

  • Minimum of (1) API Certification (API 510, 570, or 653)

  • Must be willing and able to perform/comply with the following:

  • Wear Nomex fire retardant clothing and personal protective equipment (such as steel-toe shoes, ear, and eye protection)

  • Maintain face daily so that a respirator/face mask can seal properly (some examples include being free of facial hair and/or clean shaven)

  • Working outdoors and possibly in inclement weather conditions

  • Lift (raise and transport 50 pounds), bend, stoop, perform moderate manual labor, work in confined spaces, climb, and work at various levels above the ground

  • Willing and able to obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC); Information can be found at https://www.tsa.gov/for-industry/twic.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledgeable in standard non-destructive examination (NDE) methods

  • Knowledgeable in visual welding inspection

  • Additional API certifications

  • AWS CWI Certification

  • Associate's Degree / Trade Certification

  • Basic knowledge in metallurgy and welding

  • Ability to interpret detailed fabrication drawings, piping isometrics, and P&ID's

  • Knowledgeable and conversant in damage mechanisms that affect refinery equipment including fundamentals of corrosion and basic forms of corrosion

  • Basic knowledge of risk-based inspection methodologies and how to utilize methodologies

  • Proficient with computer applications such as Word, Excel, Outlook, SAP and PCMS

The Bayway Refinery is located on the New York Harbor in Linden, New Jersey. Bayway's facilities include crude distilling, naphtha reforming, fluid catalytic cracking, solvent deasphalting, hydrodesulfurization and alkylation units. The complex also includes a polypropylene plant with the capacity to produce up to 775 million pounds per year. The refinery processes mainly light and medium, low-sulfur crude oil. Foreign crude oil is supplied to the refinery by tanker, and domestic crude oil is supplied through a combination of rail and marine transportation. Within the refinery, Phillips 66 Partners has a rail receiving facility with 75,000 BPD of offloading capacity. The refinery produces a high percentage of transportation fuels, as well as petrochemical feedstocks, residual fuel oil and home heating oil. Refined products are distributed to East Coast customers by pipeline, barge, rail car and truck.
