What you'll be doing...

As our Inside Plant Engineer, you will be responsible for planning and designing network connecting wire centers in specific local areas in a particular state. You will mostly design at the physical layer of the 7 layer OSI model.

  • Using the latest Reconfigurable Optical Add/Drop Multiplexer (ROADM) technology on an expansive fiber network.

  • Using the latest equipment and on the fiber plant will support Verizon's customers' video, data and voice services consistent with established tariff and other rules of engagement.

  • Collaborating with various Operations' teams, and also responsible for maintaining and striving to improve the reliability of such network.

  • Being apprised of the technological advancement in the telecom sector, and being promoters in driving change from a legacy network, which consist of mostly SONET, DS3, DS1 and other circuits that make up the North American Digital Hierarchy (NADH) to the Next Generation platform consisting of predominately Optical Transport Networking (OTN) and Ethernet (data) circuits.

  • Understanding OSMINE process and Verizon's desire to move to newer and better systems.

What we're looking for...

You'll need to have:

  • Associate's degree or two or more years of work experience.

  • Three or more years of relevant work experience.

Even better if you have:

  • A degree in Engineering, Science, Mathematics, or similar field.

  • Proficient computer skills (windows-based programs and corporate database systems).

  • Demonstrated exceptional analytical, communication, and leadership skills.

  • Proven ability to manage multiple assignments simultaneously.

  • Demonstrated solid written and verbal communications skills.

  • Working experience and basic knowledge of telecom Engineering Practices.

  • Experience with and high proficiency with MS tools like Excel and/or MS Access.

  • Experience with any of the following Verizon systems is a plus: CoFEE, RequestNet, or TIRKS.

VIEW JOBS 11/22/2018 12:00:00 AM 2019-02-20T00:00 Job Description: TITLE: Plant Utilities Engineer 1 LOCATION/UNIT: Energy Conservation, Development and Controls SALARY GRADE: SG-14 SALARY: $47,773 (NOTE: current or reconstructed salary for State employees in accordance with NYS Audit and Control) DURATION: Permanent POSITION DESCRIPTION: Operate, perform maintenance, troubleshoot, make repairs, run performance tests, and calibrate mechanical and electrical equipment providing heat, steam, and high temperature hot water generating and distribution systems, ventilation, air-conditioning, water supply, sanitary systems and electrical distribution in an institutional combined heat and power plant and building mechanical systems. Assist in overseeing energy management and conservation, environmental and safety concerns and preventative maintenance. Utilize Alerton and Johnson building management systems to ensure equipment and energy efficiencies. Make recommendations on major overhauls and replacement of equipment and recommend activity relating to energy conservation projects. Incumbents will supervise subordinate staff in the operation and maintenance of heating facilities and mechanical equipment. Requirements: MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Either 1. Graduate of heating, HVAC, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration apprenticeship program from the U.S. Air Force; Or 2. Must have been an enlisted machinery technician (MK) with the U.S. Coast Guard OR possession of a certificate as a Marine Engineer issued by the U.S. Coast Guard; Or 3. Must have been an enlisted power generation equipment repairer with the U.S. Army; Or 4. Must have been an enlisted gas turbine systems technician, submarine nuclear propulsion plant operator reactor control, utilities man, machinist mate, or engineman with the U.S. Navy; Or 5. Must have a Merchant Mariner's Document (MMD) and have been a qualified member of the engine department (QMED) as an oiler, fireman/water tender, refrigerating engineer or engineman with the U.S. Merchant Marine; Or 6. Completion of a New York State Department of Labor registered apprenticeship program for stationary engineers, plant maintenance (plumber/steamfitter), HVAC Mechanic or plant maintenance (refrigeration/AC); Or 7. Possession of a High-Pressure Boiler Operating Engineer License or Stationary Engineer License; Or 8. A bachelor's degree in Facilities Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Marine Engineering; Or 9. Four years of full-time hands on experience in the maintenance and operation of commercial, industrial, institutional facility, computer applications of digital energy platforms and building analytics and/or performing diagnosis, repair of HVAC systems or boilers or auxiliary equipment; Or 10. Four years of full-time hands on experience in a residential setting performing diagnosis, operation, maintenance repair of HVAC systems or boilers or auxiliary equipment; Or 11. An associate's degree in HVAC AND two years of qualifying experience as described in EITHER qualification #9 or #10 above; Or 12. Completion of an HVAC certificate or diploma from a BOCES program (900 hours) OR completion of an approved certificate in HVAC, electrical, refrigeration, boiler operations and maintenance, or plumbing from an accredited technical school or technology college AND two years of qualifying experience as described in EITHER qualification #9 or #10 above. OPERATIONAL NEEDS: Shift Hours: * Tuesday to Saturday, 11:00pm to 7:00am during the winter heating season, typically November to mid-April annually * Monday to Friday, 7:00am to 3:30pm during the non-heating season, typically mid-April through October annually * Participate in on-call roster (must provide after- hours telephone number) * Full time position based on a 40-hour work week * May be required to work overtime based on operational needs * Overnight travel to regional campuses may be required * Valid NYS Driver's License * Since the actions of other employees depend on the performance of the employee in this position, discipline for unreliable attendance is a factor that the employer will consider when filling this vacancy for Plant Utilities Engineer 1, SG-14 SPECIAL INFORMATION: Since the nature of the campus requires continuous service and emergencies may arise during other than normal work hours, employee in this position may be required to provide an after hours telephone number and be willing to accept emergency call-ins and over time work when necessary.
