Description:

The position manages and oversees the care delivered in the inpatient units of as well as oversight of the Care Coordination department and hospitalists. Develops and oversees performance improvement goals and plans. Provides leadership and mentoring to staff, promotes ongoing staff development and high quality nursing care which meets or exceeds customer expectations. Develops unit budgets and evaluates costs, revenue and departmental income. Develops and reviews unit staffing plans. Consults with staff, providers and administration to ensure patient needs are met.

The Inpatient Manager coordinates nursing activities to facilitate safe, quality patient care at the unit/department level, usually for a defined shift (such as days, nights, or weekends). Serves as a resource and role model and collaborates with a multidisciplinary team to optimize department operations. Under the direction of the Director of Patient Care, may assist with other management responsibilities as assigned.

MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Current or compact state license as a Registered Nurse by the State of Iowa.

  • Bachelor degree in nursing preferred, or actively in pursuit of BSN degree (accepted into a BSN Program and/or currently enrolled).

  • Minimum of 5 years of clinical experience required.

  • Proof of completion of Mandatory Reporter within three (3) months of hire.

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) for the Healthcare Provider certified or obtained within three (3) months of hire. Acceptable credentialing bodies and certifications include American Red Cross CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer and American Heart Association Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers.

CLINICAL FUNCTIONS

  • Maintains high level clinical competence to assess patient needs, plan patient care, implement appropriate interventions, and evaluate the effectiveness of patient care delivered to defined patient population.

  • Directs or provides emergency support measure (i.e., cardiopulmonary resuscitation, protecting patient from injury.)

  • Provides front-line leadership as a resource, mentor, and role model in delivering patient

care using a team approach.

  • Provides consultation upon request in area of clinical expertise to other nursing staff or health professionals.

  • Serves as a "Super User" for documentation in the electronic medical record.

  • Leads daily huddles and assists with maintaining huddle boards.

  • Monitors safety compliance and contributes to fostering a culture of safety at the unit level.

  • Provides for professional growth and development of staff.

  • Promotes a multi-disciplinary team approach to all patient care.

Leads and promotes evidence-based practice and research among unit leaders and staff

  • Promotes best practice on unit

MANAGERIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Supervises unit/department personnel, including registered nurses and licensed practical nurses, patient care technicians, department support assistants, and other department personnel, usually for an assigned shift (i.e. days, nights, or weekends.)

  • Facilitates efficient unit/department operations, including staff assignments and patient throughput.

  • Develops an annual operational plan, including scope of service, integrated with the organizations strategic plan and the operational plans of other departments in order to efficiently provide services.

  • Develops, implements, and periodically reviews all policies and procedures that guide and support the assigned services.

  • Adjusts staffing and prioritizes workload to meet patient/unit needs.

  • Provides support to staff to ensure patients of a positive care experience. Assists with the resolution of patient/family complaints. Escalates issues appropriately to the director or administrative representative.

  • Assists with leading quality improvement activities including performance improvement processes to ensure evidence-based practices are in place.

  • Provides for smooth operation of assigned units

  • Develops/ evaluates performance improvement plans for assigned unites

  • Maintains current knowledge of practice standards for assigned units and implements changes/ updates as needed.

  • Plans unit budgets and evaluates effectively
