With programs and partners in 70 countries, the International Services Department (ISD) of the American Red Cross works to strengthen the global Red Cross Red Crescent Network in order to deliver critical assistance to some of the most vulnerable communities in the world, reaching 100 million people annually.

The American Red Cross is in search of a dynamic leader with experience partnering and collaborating with both technology/digital sector and non-profit organizations. The role of the coordinator, Innovation and Partnership will support this effort in collaboration with the Northern California Coastal and Northwest (Washington State) Regions of the American Red Cross and the Global Disaster Preparedness Center (GDPC). The coordinator will be responsible for creating an environment conducive to foster partnerships for innovation and provide a mechanism for building collaboration with companies that are interested in engagement beyond mere transactional relationships. The horizon scanning and engagement will extend beyond the technology sector and will seek expertise in HR, team dynamics, behavior change, training, change management, UXUI, iterative project management, strategy development etc. This increased collaboration, as defined by each society and partner department, will extend the collective reach and impact of the American Red Cross and the wider RCRC Movement to safeguard and strengthen communities.

With the establishment of this position, the American Red Cross makes a clear commitment to be a collaborative partner in innovative activities with a growing group of engaged startups and established companies. The coordinator will support, design and prototype (pilot) solutions that directly address humanitarian needs and challenges; document and disseminate the results; and position innovations to scale where impact and sustainability can be demonstrated. Alternately, the coordinator may act as a facilitator who links opportunities with teams or units with capacity to pilot and iterate in support of their own objectives and goals. Key learnings and knowledge gained through this process will be documented and shared to improve future practice within the American Red Cross and throughout the humanitarian network.

The position will report directly to the Executive Director for International Response and Programs and will maintain an integrated, collaborative relationship with the Vice President, Fundraising Programs and Operations, country and regional field delegation teams, IFRC regional offices (as appropriate), and internal units as listed above to ensure consistent and standardized use of good practices and processes.

Responsibilities:

  • This position will collect and validate a list of mission-critical problems identified by American Red Cross and other Red Cross/ Red Crescent partners including IFRC and ICRC.

  • Liaise with American Red Cross regional office, domestic services and the office of the Chief Innovation Officer

  • In taking guidance and direction from lead individual relationship managers, this position will provide a dynamic and accessible partner for tech companies and foundations in Silicon Valley interested in collaborating with the American Red Cross's International Department and Disaster Cycle Services

  • Coordinate with the Global Disaster Preparedness Center (GDPC), the International Services department, and all relevant regions, including staff and volunteers, to create direct field level opportunities to locally test concepts, technology, and partnerships (domestically and internationally).

  • Coordinate closely with technical advisors in the conceptualization, execution, monitoring and of pilot activities to be conducted in partnerships

  • Coordinate with corporate relationship partners for programmatic engagement to ensure no competition with fundraising priorities of American Red Cross.

  • Review and approve project updates and communications materials to help shape the culture/approach/engagement/capacity of the Movement and to build a more 'literate' organization when it comes to these engagements with the private sector.

  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or the equivalent experience is required. Graduate level degree in a related field is preferred.

  • Minimum seven years of experience in technology and innovation, nonprofit management, Corporate partnership cultivation and engagement, or a related field.

  • Demonstrated experience integrating innovative approaches to solving humanitarian challenges.

  • Experience and knowledge of Project Management and the project management cycle, including project design, launch, implementation, monitoring, evaluation, and learning.

  • Experience in proposal writing, project design, and other supportive fund-raising methodologies is desirable.

  • Must have excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively and in a collegial fashion with people from a wide range of backgrounds and cultures.

  • Experience working and leading in a matrixed management structure.

  • Experience working with and within the Red Cross/Red Crescent network is preferred.

  • Experience working with local/national partners.

  • Must be responsible and self-motivated.

  • Candidate must have strong verbal and written communications skills and must demonstrate familiarity with evolving industry standards.

  • Second language is desirable.

  • Ability to travel up to 35%
