Provide Technical Leadership Design for Manufacturability (DFM) - in plastic injection molding part design for Design Engineers to meet power tool requirements & assure on-going part Quality at competitive Costs.
Provide injection molding part design geometry guidance (i.e. rib, section thickness, draft, shutoff);
Enforce parts' 2-D drawings with realistic GD&T & datum setup;
Develop mold specifications, Workmanship Standards & Performance expectation for mold RFQ.
Lead & work with Global plastic injection mold builders to develop robust production mold at competitive cost.
Optimize Part Orientation, cavity/Inserts, gate/runner, Parting Lines, Slides, Ejector pin location, cooling path, Tune-in plan..;
Review/assess/approve mold FEA mold flow (i.e. part fill, warp, pressure, balance) analysis and mold design;
Develop & Rationalize tune-in plan/iterations (i.e. steel safe location/allowance)
Optimize injection molding process parameters through mold development sampling;
Provide accurate estimate on injection mold and part molding costs - cycle time, weight, scrapetc.
Lead mfg plant QA's & mold shops/suppliers on trial-shot sampling parts measurements (i.e. inspection fixture/ functional gage's design/review/build, rational datum/CMM-coordinate that comply with drawings GD&T requirements) and determine tune-in allowance/direction/iterations to achieve process capability (CP/CPK > 1.33) at critical characteristics/features;
Assist in global injection mold builder development & internal injection molding process engineer development.
Explore/introduce advanced injection molding technologies (i.e. conformal cooling, in-mold decoration/labeling..) to sustain SBD's competitive advantage
Willingness to international/domestic travels (estimate 10% to 25% annual) in supporting global injection mold & advanced injection mfg process development
BS in Mechanical, Manufacturing or Material Engineering related or equivalent Degree
5+ years of hands-on experiences in plastic injection mold design/development, mass-production molding process engineering, and skilled in molding parameters optimization, trouble shooting & in-process quality control.
Proven records of hands-on statistical problem solving (DOE & SPC) & Lean 6-sigma practices at process improvement & trouble-shooting.
Hands-on GD&T/CMM & inspection fixture/gaging/metrology design experience is a plus.
2-shot molding, over-molding & thermoset material transfer/injection molding knowledge & experience is a plus.
Conformal cooling core design/development & mold flow simulation analysis experience is a plus
