Job Description:


  • Provide Technical Leadership Design for Manufacturability (DFM) - in plastic injection molding part design for Design Engineers to meet power tool requirements & assure on-going part Quality at competitive Costs.

  • Provide injection molding part design geometry guidance (i.e. rib, section thickness, draft, shutoff);

  • Enforce parts' 2-D drawings with realistic GD&T & datum setup;

  • Develop mold specifications, Workmanship Standards & Performance expectation for mold RFQ.

  • Lead & work with Global plastic injection mold builders to develop robust production mold at competitive cost.

  • Optimize Part Orientation, cavity/Inserts, gate/runner, Parting Lines, Slides, Ejector pin location, cooling path, Tune-in plan..;

  • Review/assess/approve mold FEA mold flow (i.e. part fill, warp, pressure, balance) analysis and mold design;

  • Develop & Rationalize tune-in plan/iterations (i.e. steel safe location/allowance)

  • Optimize injection molding process parameters through mold development sampling;

  • Provide accurate estimate on injection mold and part molding costs - cycle time, weight, scrapetc.

  • Lead mfg plant QA's & mold shops/suppliers on trial-shot sampling parts measurements (i.e. inspection fixture/ functional gage's design/review/build, rational datum/CMM-coordinate that comply with drawings GD&T requirements) and determine tune-in allowance/direction/iterations to achieve process capability (CP/CPK > 1.33) at critical characteristics/features;

  • Assist in global injection mold builder development & internal injection molding process engineer development.

  • Explore/introduce advanced injection molding technologies (i.e. conformal cooling, in-mold decoration/labeling..) to sustain SBD's competitive advantage

  • Willingness to international/domestic travels (estimate 10% to 25% annual) in supporting global injection mold & advanced injection mfg process development


  • BS in Mechanical, Manufacturing or Material Engineering related or equivalent Degree

  • 5+ years of hands-on experiences in plastic injection mold design/development, mass-production molding process engineering, and skilled in molding parameters optimization, trouble shooting & in-process quality control.

  • Proven records of hands-on statistical problem solving (DOE & SPC) & Lean 6-sigma practices at process improvement & trouble-shooting.

  • Hands-on GD&T/CMM & inspection fixture/gaging/metrology design experience is a plus.

  • 2-shot molding, over-molding & thermoset material transfer/injection molding knowledge & experience is a plus.

  • Conformal cooling core design/development & mold flow simulation analysis experience is a plus

  • Proactive project management in an organized professional manner in given time constraints.

This dynamic team is on the cutting edge of innovation with two core focuses: - Managing a global crowdsourced internal innovation platform that sources ideas from across the company and globe. - Managing SBD's employee makerspace where anyone can learn how to use making equipment and bring their ideas to life. As the engineer for the Innovation team, this candidate will be responsible for various duties including researching, recommending improvements, and prototyping ideas related to both core focuses. No two challenges will be alike and you'll find yourself working on projects that cover all of our SBU's, supporting our innovation teams, as well as participating in makerspace activities and operations. The ideal candidate will have experience in product engineering, Rapid Prototyping, 3D modeling, and presenting ideas and proposals clearly. This person should have experience with hands-on prototyping using CNC equipment, and a general background in electronics is highly desired. ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES * Development of functional prototypes utilizing Electrical and Mechanical engineering principles * Fabrication of prototypes using our makerspace and fabrication tools * Interfacing with Industrial Designers to implement functional and aesthetic design into prototypes * Facilitate Makerspace prototyping activities * Occasional maintenance on equipment * Provide guidance and assistance to the SparkTank team * Design and integration of electrical circuits to execute prototype functions * Utilize marketing input to design creative solutions to end-user requirements * Analyze data to reach sound design/business decisions in complex technical situations * Perform preliminary dynamic mechanical simulations * Ability to handle multiple projects, strong interpersonal, verbal & written communication skills * Patent discovery and development * Use of FEA to provide feasibility studies of core physics concepts to drive prototype design * Machine design of mechanical systems * Use of CAD to model prototypes and share information with other units within the organization * Use of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) for external machine shop part manufacture Stanley Black And Decker Towson MD
