Job Description:

As a Inherited Diseases Clinical Specialist (G11630) you will administer the Newborn Screening Program; ensure all newborn children in the State of Nebraska are screened and tested for specific diseases identified through legislation; directs physicians, nurses, lab and hospital personnel and parents on abnormal, positive and inconclusive newborns screening (NBS) results to ensure newborn children receive the appropriate tests, diagnosis and treatment.

Job Duties:

  • Directs medical staff to take immediate and appropriate actions based on the NBS results timely to avoid long term health consequences.

  • Follow the infant until an appropriate diagnosis has been made or ruled out and evaluate results to ensure the appropriate testing has been done and that correct interpretations have been made.

  • Interpret lab values and communicate findings accurately and efficiently to clinical providers and parents. Assign cut-off values and implement follow up protocols for newborn screening disorders.

  • Facilitate communication between the screening laboratory, and clinical providers.

  • Monitor for missing newborns screening results; notify physicians and hospital administrators when a newborn is discharged without a NBS specimen collected; prepare correspondence for parents when an infant is born out of hospital to ensure compliance with state law.

  • Notify county attorneys when parents refuse to comply with state law and work with legal representatives to ensure that a newborn screening specimen is collected.

  • Follow-up on specimens collected after transfusion; use daily reports to ensure that the program is informed of all abnormal results and to evaluate timing of collection, accuracy of transfusion information, and the presence of in utero transfusion.

  • Create data collection systems to collect and track data regarding notifications, follow-ups, diagnosis and interventions. Analyze data to detect patterns and identify areas needing improvement. Report out to the Newborn Metabolic Screening Advisory Committee, labs, hospitals, health care providers and other stakeholders.

  • Advises out of state laboratories and program staff regarding Nebraska statutes and protocols when a child's provider is out of state. Ensures compliance obtaining additional testing as mandated by Nebraska State statute when infants are born in Nebraska but screened in other states.

  • Determines and reports public health infant diagnostic classifications of confirmed disorders for program utilization, national level data collection and comparison to other programs.

  • Develops written materials, program specific recording tools, and collaborates on follow-up algorithms when new diseases are added or screening methods change.

  • Represents Nebraska and presents at national meetings, workgroup conference calls, grand rounds, advisory committee meetings, pediatric conferences and provide evidence , testify in court or depositions regarding state statute, regulations and communication with parents.

Requirements / Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's Degree in lab science, nursing, or related field AND two years of relevant formal training and/or experience. An equivalent combination of six years relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Hiring Rate of Position: New Hire Rate: $28.841. Minimum Perm Rate after successful completion of original Probation: $30.284.

Work Schedule: 8am to 5pm M-F. Evenings or weekends hours as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Skills in: Comfort working in complex IT environments. Analyzing large data sets and identifying clinically significant outliers that are of importance to the program and clinical laboratory; researching and evaluating complex problems and reviewing related information.

Ability to: quickly and accurately recognize time critical results and take the correct action to alert stakeholders and help communicate the initiation of intervention; communicate complex human genetic, endocrine and immunological principles into simple language to explain complex laboratory findings to patients and families; research and evaluate medical and scientific literature; design and use education and informational material related to newborns screening, including Physician ACT Sheets.
