In the Navy, information technology (IT) plays an important role in everything from electronic mail systems, to shipboard control systems, to Special Intelligence (SI) systems. Navy Information System Technicians (IT specialists) are Enlisted Sailors who engage in a broad range of responsibilities, including network administration, database management and computer hardware and software implementation. Their responsibilities include:

  • Operating and maintaining Navy global satellite telecommunications systems
  • Serving as admin on mainframe computers and local and wide area networks
  • Implementing micro-computer systems throughout the Fleet
  • Serving as an important part of the Information Warfare Community in its mission to gain a deep understanding of the inner workings of adversaries and developing unmatched knowledge of the battle space during wartime

Responsibilities

As an Information Technology professional, you will help ensure the viability of essential communications links. Youll provide administrative support for the equipment that keeps records on everything from personnel training to healthcare to promotions, to offering technical support and training to fellow personnel. Your role may also include:

  • Writing programs to handle data for a wide variety of applications
  • Operating and coordinating automated networks, datalinks and circuits
  • Applying diagnostic, corrective and recovery techniques to information systems
  • Analyzing communication signals
  • Providing telecommunications and computer-related training and assistance
  • Performing preventive and corrective maintenance on state-of-the-art equipment
  • Operating and maintaining global satellite telecommunications systems

Work Environment

Information Systems Technicians serve in versatile roles both afloat and ashore on ships or at communications stations in the United States or overseas. Typical work involves mental analysis and problem solving and takes place in clean, air-conditioned electronic equipment space or computer rooms. Duties may be performed individually or as part of a team.

Training & Advancement

Upon completion of initial 79 week Recruit Training (known as Boot Camp), those pursuing an Information Systems Technician position receive formal Navy schooling at A School in Pensacola, FL. For approximately 24 weeks, they develop the working knowledge it takes to be Navy IT specialists in preparation for their first assignment on a ship or at a shore station.
Starting with extensive technical preparation in everything from database design to computer networking to communications systems, skills continue to be enhanced through on-the-job training and experience. Promotion opportunities are regularly available but competitive and based on performance. Its also important to note that specialized training received and work experience gained in the course of service can lead to valuable credentialing and occupational opportunities in related fields.

Beyond offering access to professional credentials and certifications, Navy technical and operational training in the field of information technology can translate to credit hours toward a bachelors or associate degree through the American Council on Education. Requirements

Qualifications & Requirements

A high school diploma or higher is required to become an Enlisted Sailor in the IT field in the Navy. Those seeking an Information Systems Technician position must be U.S. citizens who can meet eligibility requirements for a Top Secret/Sensitive Compartmented Information security clearance. You should have a good working aptitude of math, an understanding of modern computing devices and the capability to do highly detail-oriented work.

Will be required to lead meetings, speak to documentation, and help with training where needed. * Problem Solving to track and resolve process breakdowns. * Developing and maintaining formal process documentation including procedures and process flow diagrams. Visio experience will be helpful. * Acting as a subject matter expert to effectively partner with business customers to achieve desired outcome or improvement by clarifying needs and providing appropriate solutions. * Effective planning for larger initiatives to track and report progress to senior management. Basic Qualifications: * Bachelor's Degree * At least 5 years of people leadership experience * At least 2 years of experience working in a public cloud environment (AWS, Azure, or GCP) * At least 4 years of data analysis experience * At least 4 years of experience using Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets * At least 4 years of experience using Microsoft Powerpoint or Google Slides Preferred Qualifications: * Master's Degree * 2+ years of experience in Capacity Management or Capacity Planning * Lean, Agile, Six Sigma, Business Process Management, or Project Management certification * ITIL certification * 2+ years of experience defining capacity thresholds * 2+ years experience with SQL experience At this time, Capital One will not sponsor a new applicant for employment authorization for this position.
