The City of Torrance is seeking TWO experienced INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY SPCIALISTS who want to be part of the Torrance Police Department!

The Department

The Torrance Police Department has been proudly serving the community of Torrance for over 100 years.  Known for its low crime rates, the City of Torrance consistently ranks among the safest cities in the nation!

The Position

Under direction, Information Technology Specialists install and maintain computer systems, networks and related equipment; conduct training and develop training materials, and administer the City's network infrastructure and information systems.

Although normal working hours are a 9/80 schedule with alternate Fridays off, this position must be available to work on various weekends and closed Fridays during computer "down" times. In addition, the Information Technology Analyst must be available to be on call.

Education and Experience

Any combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge and skills is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and skills would be:

Two years of technical experience performing a full range of computer support and networking activities including software and hardware installation, applications support, trouble-shooting, LAN administration, or in conducting training or preparing user documentation involving data processing systems or software currently in use by the City and graduation from a recognized two-year college with an AA degree in computer science or a related field. 

Ideal Candidate

In addition to the minimum requirements, the ideal candidate will have:

  • Experience in providing technical support to end-users, including troubleshooting hardware and software issues, and diagnosing problems in a Windows, Active Directory, and O365.

  • Understand how to operate, install, and maintain computer hardware, peripherals, and software as well as the principles, practices, and procedures involved in the maintenance and operations;

  • Experience in managing user accounts, permissions, and security settings in a Windows AD environment;

  • Experience in monitoring and maintenance of IT systems to ensure their optimal performances, security, and availability such as system backups, anti-virus, Windows and application updates;

  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks, manage competing priorities, and work efficiently to complete tasks and projects in a given timeframe;

  • Excellent oral and written communications skills; 

  • A team-oriented attitude and the ability to work well with others;

  • Willingness to be available at times outside regularly scheduled work hours to perform system maintenance or resolve operational problems.

License and/or Certifications

Certification as a Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE) is desirable.  MCSE certification must be related to products and versions currently in use by the City.

Desired certifications include Microsoft, Cisco, CompTIA, Cybersecurity, and/or Information Security.
