Duties and Responsibilities

(Note: * denotes essential functions)

  • *Manages and maintains college server infrastructure through the use of security measures that follow industry standards and best practices.

  • *Designs and manages a secure Active Directory structure that meets the campus needs and follows industry standards and best practices.

  • *Manages, deploys, configures, and maintains servers in a virtualized and traditional environment

  • *Performs in-depth technical advisement and problem resolution on hardware and software problems including operating systems, file operations, and networked printing.

  • *Configures server systems for high availability including strategies for back-up and recovery, fail over, load balancing, and full redundancy to ensure effective protection and integrity of organizational data and assets.

  • *Identifies, analyzes, and resolves/troubleshoots server and workstation application problems. Escalate as necessary to ensure resolution.

  • *Monitors the status and performance of various college-wide and departmental servers; including as appropriate: systems, applications, services, networks, and related devices using monitoring tools and applications available.

  • *Implements Group Policy effectively to manage clients and servers to prevent security vulnerabilities but allow campus business operations.

  • *Design, develop, test, implement, and document programs and scripts that automate routine tasks for network servers. clients, and other systems.

  • *Performs monitoring and management of the backup system. Creates reports and documentation of backup and storage environments, related activities, and tasks.

  • *Installs, tests, and documents software upgrades, updates, and other security patches.

  • *Serves as advanced-level technical support person to non-technical administrators, staff, and to other IT professionals in the provision of all server related support and services.

  • Assists in the development of computer, network, firewall, backup, and server support strategies in consultation and cooperation with management and staff in support of the University and missions and goals. Coordinates and implements strategies.

  • Assists with integration of computer systems into LAN/WAN environments including server, client and peripheral equipment/installation/configuration and connecting the LAN/WAN environments to UH Network to access enterprise applications/services.

  • *Performs and tests backups and restores to ensure that enterprise data is effectively protected.

  • *Creates, implements, maintains, modifies, updates, and documents college policies and practices specific to server security and access.

  • Keeps abreast of the relevant industry trends following relevant blogs, podcasts, or through online communities and forums. Update technical skills by attending seminars, classes, and industry conferences.

  • *Establishes and implements policies, procedures, and technologies (including firewalls) to ensure maximum server security, from internal/external/physical threats.

  • Adapts written and printed documentation for electronic access and distribution such as web-based access via PDF files or online knowledgebase.

  • Maintains good documentation of server infrastructure.

  • *Plans and maintains server related hardware and software replacement cycles.

  • *Performs security vulnerability testing on campus server infrastructure periodically.

  • Work assignments may include working outside of normally scheduled work hours - day, night, weekend, and/or holiday hours, as directed.

  • *Travels between campuses via the operation of a motor vehicle will occur on a regular basis in support of college duties.

  • Other duties as may be assigned

Minimum Qualifications

  • Possession of a pertinent baccalaureate educational degree in Computer Science, Management Information Systems, Computer Engineering, Information & Computer Sciences or related field and 3 years of progressively responsible professional information technology experience with responsibilities for server management, of which 2 years of the experience must have been comparable in scope and complexity to the next lower payband in the University of Hawai'i broadband system; or any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated.

  • Considerable working knowledge of server management in an enterprise environment as demonstrated by the broad knowledge and understanding of the full range of pertinent standard and evolving information technology concepts, principles and methodology.

  • Considerable working knowledge and understanding of the broad technology, systems, hardware and software associated with system administration.

  • Demonstrated ability to recognize a wide range of intricate problems, use reasoning and logic to determine accurate causes, and apply principles and practices to determine, evaluate, integrate, and implement practical and thorough solutions in an effective and timely manner.

  • Demonstrated ability to interpret and present information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing, verbally and by preparation of reports and other materials.

  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team leaders and members, and individuals.

  • If applicable, for supervisory work, demonstrated ability to lead subordinates, manage work priorities and projects, and manage employee relations.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of server configuration, implementation, administration, management and maintenance according to industry standards and best practices.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of Active Directory and Group Policy design, implementation and management according to industry standards and best practices.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of Windows Client and Server security and be able to manage the security measures to effectively protect the campus.

  • Considerable knowledge of one or more programming/scripting languages.

  • Ability to work a variable work schedule; and work outside normally scheduled work hours including day, night, weekend and/or holiday hours, as directed.

  • Considerable knowledge of troubleshooting procedures and practices for hardware, software and networks in a distributed computing environment.

  • Valid driver's license. Ability to travel to work at various locations, on-campus and off-campus.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Extensive experience working with Active Directory in a multi-point production environment

  • Advanced knowledge of Windows Server (2016/2019/2022) / Desktop Operating Systems (WIN 10/11).

  • Considerable experience with network management devices Cisco or HPE/Aruba network management.

  • Considerable experience with PowerShell.

  • Experience developing, testing, and implementing Disaster Recovery policies and procedures.

  • Demonstrated commitment and/or experience promoting equity and a diverse workforce/academic environment.

  • Demonstrated commitment and/or experience supporting the success of students.
