The Office of Communications and Marketing at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, seeks applications and nominations for the position of a Public Relations Specialist I.

We craft audience-focused communications based on data, best-practices, and emerging trends. The division employs more than 50 full-time professionals across several cross-functional teams

The PR Specialist I (student communications coordinator) position works as a member of the Office of Communications and Marketing to support the mission of the university. This position works with units and centers on campus to promote student-related news and updates via internal communications, media placements, and social media.

Responsibilities:

  • Works with clients within Division of Student Life, Enrollment Management, and diversity and engagement to generate news and feature stories that advance the university's strategic goals

  • Generates ideas for developing trend stories and pitches to media to capitalize on current events and feature UT experts as thought leaders

  • Edits submitted content for news releases, websites, and other uses with a focus on the intended audience

  • Serves as member of social media team

  • Contributes to student-related issues management and crisis communications

  • Develops, writes, edits, and distributes student electronic newsletters and broadcast emails through use of content management system

  • Provides on-site assistance and serves as lead media contact for student events

  • Works closely with teams across the Office of Communications and Marketing to develop and execute student communication-focused marketing plans, events, and other initiatives

  • Contributes to a team by helping clients develop communication goals and plans to reach student audiences

  • Co-manages student intern

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Understanding of communicating with a variety of audiences (specifically current and prospective students)

  • Working with traditional and emerging media

  • Issues management and crisis communication

  • Knowledge of UT brand

  • Familiarity with student life and student organizations in a higher education environment

  • Good writing and editing skills

Qualifications:

Required: Bachelor's degree. This is an entry-level position. The candidate must have an ability to write and have a general knowledge of student-focused issues.

Preferred: Familiarity with student life and student organizations in a higher education environment
