Job Description and Duties

Do you have a passion for making a positive impact on the lives of working Californians? As a Bilingual Information Officer II providing media relations, social media, email and marketing support for the Department of Industrial Relations' Division of Occupational Safety and Health - commonly known as Cal/OSHA, you will have an opportunity to provide essential information to workers regarding their labor rights and to employers on their responsibilities to comply with the state's labor laws. This is an opportunity to communicate and promote the Cal/OSHA's news to the media and the public, and to work closely with the Cal/OSHA Chief, OEA leadership and DIR leadership in performing high-profile and multi-faceted communications assignments involving broad policy issues encompassing employment and labor laws.

The incumbent will be required to travel (20-35%) to public events, meetings and departmental events. This position also requires responsiveness to the public and media, and attendance of public meetings outside of normal business hours.

The incumbent is expected to maintain a hybrid work schedule with a minimum of two days per week in the office, or more based on operational needs. The position requires the ability for prolonged sitting and to work at a computer for extended periods of time, and to move and transport office items in a safe manner.

The incumbent must handle sensitive and confidential materials and matters in a professional manner and establish cooperative working relationships with others. The incumbent has daily contact with other OEA staff and also has contact frequently with staff in other DIR divisions, programs and units, as well as frequent contact with stakeholders and members of the press.

Department Information

The Department of Industrial Relations (DIR) was established in 1927. Its mission is to improve working conditions for California's wage earners and to advance opportunities for profitable employment in California. DIR administers and enforces laws governing wages, workplace safety and health, apprenticeship training programs, and medical care and other benefits for injured workers.

DIR's Office of External Affairs (OEA) assists all groups in the department with strategic consultations to develop and share public-facing content and to communicate effectively with each other and the public.

The Bilingual Information Officer II will, in collaboration with other bilingual OEA team members, make recommendations to OEA leadership on how to improve the department's communications to ensure equity-embedded, multilingual messaging.
