Industrial Hygienist

Trinseo has an exciting opportunity for a Responsible Care Leader with Industrial Hygienist or Environmental Specialist expertise, whose primary focus will be developing, implementing, managing the EH&S Policies for Trinseo's Midland site as well as leading the EH&S Group, while simultaneously serving as either the Industrial Hygiene or Environmental Subject Matter Expert (SME) for Trinseo North America. This position is located at the Midland, MI facility but will provide support and expertise to Dalton, GA, for which limited travel may be required.

Key Responsibilities as Responsible Care Leader

  • Develop, implement and manage the EH&S Program for the Midland, MI site

  • Provide EH&S Functional Expertise and People Leadership and coaching to the EH&S Technicians and Specialists group

  • Serve as a member of the Midland Site Leadership Team

  • Serve as facility contact for government agencies (e.g. OSHA, MIOSHA, NRC, DEQ)

  • Provide subject matter expert review of facility MOC's

  • Serve as an EH&S Auditor in Trinseo's internal EH&S Auditing program

  • Provide influential leadership and technical expertise needed as a result of internal/external EH&S audits

  • Assist facilities in response to unplanned events by leading/participating in investigations into injuries and illnesses investigations and taking an active role in securing appropriate follow up

  • Collaborate with appropriate personnel to institute control and remedial measures for hazardous and potentially hazardous conditions and equipment.

  • Work with third party vendors to develop North America's EH&S Programs

  • Ensure EH&S Expertise for project reviews

  • Responsible for implementing, maintaining and improving the EH&S Management Systems

Examples of Key Responsibilities as Functional Specialist

  • Be the key Environmental or Industrial Hygiene focal point for Trinseo North America
  • (IH) Serve as North America regulated chemical SME
  • (IH) Provide oversight for EH&S tech for the collection of samples for noise, dust, gases, vapors, and other potentially toxic materials for analysis. Facilitates field and office ergonomic evaluations.
  • (IH) Provide technical review and interpretation of sampling results.
  • (IH) Investigate adequacy of ventilation, exhaust equipment, lighting, and other conditions which may affect employee health, comfort, or efficiency.
  • (IH) Assist facility personnel during Industrial Hygiene Monitoring
  • (IH) Serves as facility Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) and North America Radiation SME
  • (E) Manage the air, water and waste permits for Trinseo Midland
  • (E) Collect, input and calculate EH&S reporting information
  • (E) Submit of permit applications for new and modified equipment, request for permit changes and submit permit renewal applications to ensure continuous license to operate
  • (E) Utilize EH&S Expertise to obtain clear interpretations of site-specific regulatory process, regulations, laws and associated procedures
  • (E) Act as Agency Visit Protocol Owner and implementer
  • (E) Able to identify and keep current with local, area and regional environmental requirements. Interpret, implement and ensure full sustainable compliance.


  • Bachelor's Degree in EH&S or Engineering

  • 4+ years safety and health experience

  • Safety and health certification

  • Certified Industrial Hygiene or Environmental Processional

  • Experience with external regulatory requirements both at the federal and state level

Functional Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Demonstrate influential leadership skills and the ability to inspire others

  • Ability to lead EH&S implementation initiatives across the site

Reporting Relationship(s)

This position reports to the Sr. Production Leader, M&E and is a supervisory role to the EH&S Group.
