Job Description:

Under the direction of the Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Officer, the Industrial Hygiene Officer (IHO) shall support the various health and safety programs at Farmingdale State College (FSC) to assure compliance with all pertinent regulations promulgated by, but not limited to, OSHA/PESH, EPA, DOT, NYSDEC, NYSDOH, NYSDOL, and guidelines put forth by ASHRAE, NFPA, ACGIH, and ANSI to achieve the optimal control of the reduction of hazards and exposures which are detrimental to people and/or property. The IHO will routinely interact with faculty, staff, departmental administrators, and regulatory agencies, and function as an internal consultant to all levels of the College in matters of occupational health and safety.

This position is designated Essential Personnel for specific College operations.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the development and implementation of an Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) program for the College.

  • Serve as the primary resource to respond to mold incidences on campus.

  • Work with EHS Officer to support the Lab Safety and Chemical Hygiene programs to evaluate and select controls to prevent hazardous exposures in research/academic environments.

  • Hazardous building material management including bulk and air sampling, abatement oversight (asbestos/ACM and lead based paint/LCM), and collaborate with Capital Programs and contractor program management for asbestos, lead-based paint, and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs).

  • Perform industrial hygiene monitoring and exposure assessments, including hazard exposure assessments and exposure monitoring for potential chemical and physical occupational hazards.

  • Administer the "Voluntary Use" N95 Respiratory Protection Program for employees of FSC, and support, as needed/requested, the student clinical rotation N95 fit test program.

  • Develop and maintain environmental and occupational health and safety related programs, manuals, guidelines, and associated web pages to be incorporated into FSC health and safety policy and programs, and/or to FSC's EHS web content.

  • Develop and conduct training on health and safety related topics.

  • Develop engineering and administrative controls and recommend personal protective equipment to properly safeguard people, installations and equipment with respect to hazardous exposures, and safe use of toxic and/or hazardous substances.

  • Advise the EH&S Officer and College leadership on environmental and occupational health issues to reduce injury and disease risks among the College at large.

  • Respond to, and investigate, environmental health and safety issues, as warranted/directed.

  • Identify and prioritize hazardous areas for evaluation, determine sampling strategy, select and use sampling equipment, and choose analytical test(s) to be performed.

Requirements:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree.

  • Minimum of one years' experience in the industrial hygiene field.

  • Proficiency in use of IAQ and IH field equipment and sampling instrumentation.

  • Experience in developing, implementing and enforcing safety programs and protocols.

  • Working knowledge of applicable Federal and State regulations and standards, including laboratory safety rules, regulations and established guidelines.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Degree in industrial hygiene, safety management, engineering or a related field.

  • Experience in Higher Education

  • Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) certification, Associate (ASP) or Certified Safety Professional (CSP) certificate.

  • Licensed in NYS to handle or manage asbestos, mold, and/or lead (USEPA).

  • OSHA HAZWOPER, OSHA-10 Hour, OSHA 30-Hour or OSHA 40-Hour training.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Must be able to ascend and descend ladders, walk, and stand for long periods of time, walk on uneven surfaces, be able to work above and below ground level, work in cramped or confined spaces and work outside in various environmental conditions which include but are not limited to cold temperatures, hot temperatures, windy conditions, and inclement weather.

Additional Information:

This is a full-time UUP position.

  • For the first 10 working days, beginning Monday, February 26, 2024 and ending Friday, March 8, 2024, applications will be limited to UUP Farmingdale.

  • Salary: $75,000 + $3,087 in downstate location pay = $78,087 Total Annual Compensation. Salary may increase commensurate with experience.
