Industrial Engineering Manager

Core Responsibilities

  • Define, engineer and implement efficient and reliable Engineering processes for existing and new product that guarantees consistent quality output

  • Efficient assignment of Industrial / Manufacturing Engineering resources to support all aspects of plant operations (production, logistics and quality) on a daily basis as well as during specific project activities

  • Secure new product / product change introduction via management of project change and manufacturing engineers resources within assigned area of responsibility

  • Secure accurate build documentation utilizing Volvo specific systems

  • Secure proper work station layout through the team's understanding and implementation of Lean Manufacturing principles including but not limited to tooling requirement, part presentation, material flow and ergonomic principles

  • Develop accurate manning levels for various production rates utilizing industrial engineering line balance techniques based on standardized time developed using accepted industrial engineering practices

  • Identify capital improvement projects and coordinate with other disciplines (finance, maintenance, production) to justify funding to implement improvements

  • Develop a professional team of engineers through providing/assisting/coordinating the necessary training for new employees

  • Champion Lean Manufacturing / VPS (Volvo Production System) initiatives including (but not limited to) Work Place Organization (WPO), Continuous Improvement, Kaizen leadership, Advanced Manufacturing initiatives for area of responsibility

  • Provide personnel development for employees utilizing the Personal Business Plan process, discussions on training activities, involvement in project activities

  • Provide succession planning by preparing individuals for future advancement opportunities through the use of the Product Development Process, mentoring activities, providing career enhancing training activities and opportunities to act in leadership capacity

  • Continuously pursue self-improvement through seeking knowledge of new concepts, techniques and technologies related to Industrial Engineering, benchmarking other areas/departments/organizations for potential improvement ideas

Minimum Education Required

  • Bachelor's Degree Required in Engineering or Applied Sciences

Minimum Years of Experience Required

  • Five (5) years of Industrial Engineering experience with educational requirements

  • Ten (10) years of experience without Industrial Engineering experience without educational requirements

Additional Skills Required

  • Knowledge of Volvo Manufacturing/Engineering Systems (SPRINT, Flex, KOLA, RIMS, ORF, DIS)

  • Knowledge of Volvo product/manufacturing

  • Lean Manufacturing knowledge and Techniques

  • Capacity to work with technical drawings and conceptualize manufacturing solutions

  • Knowledge of productivity improvement tools, methods and line balancing techniques

The internship experience enables students to participate in professional activities for the Volvo Dublin, Virginia facility by working on important and innovative projects. The internship role will start in early January 2019 and run through the end of May 2019 as a part-time position with a target of 15-20 hours per week. Professional Objectives 1. Project Presentations – Formal project presentations will be required to be presented to peers, management, and senior leaders within the organization. 2. Mentor Feedback – Throughout the entire summer experience, the mentor will provide verbal and written feedback on performance. Core Responsibilities 1. Industrial Engineering Project – The intern will complete a project(s) focused using his/her industrial engineering skill sets to improve operations in the facility. Projects will focus on improving ergonomics, measuring cycle times, and developing improved techniques to reduce cost of operations. 2. Major Specific Project – As the summer progresses, an additional project will be given to the intern with a focus on his/her field of academic study. The project will be focused around the student's training and needs of the organization. Skill Set Requirements and Minimum Education Requirements * Applicants must be enrolled and pursuing an Industrial Engineering Systems or Mechanical Engineering undergraduate degree at an accredited school and have completed 30 semester hours prior to the start of the internship. * Applicants must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 * Applicants should be interested in pursuing a professional career in a manufacturing facility upon graduation. * Applicants should also have a working knowledge of CAD Programs, MSWord, MSExcel, and Statistical Analysis calculations.
