The Packaging Engineer position supports the logistics organization through a variety of projects focused on the evaluation of packaging components for all brands, ensuring incident free transit from vendor to distribution center, and distribution center to store/customer. The position also supports projects focused on maximizing throughput, increasing productivity, and decreasing waste. Position will work closely with the Brands, Operations and Engineering teams.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities:
Serve as in-house expert on packaging materials, design and quality.
Work with merchandising and sourcing teams to identify appropriate packing solution for specific product attributes.
Work with vendors and factories to ensure that packaging meets approved specifications.
Analyze current packing to achieve optimum standardization and cost efficiency.
Maintain ongoing dialogue with distribution center and transportation operations teams to identify opportunities for improved product packaging.
Evaluate ocean container cube utilization opportunities through improved packaging.
Monitor distribution center carton selection process for outbound shipments to retail stores and web customers.
Develop and maintain documentation for carton/container specifications.
Support the efforts to develop and design distribution centes as it relates to packaging.
Lead the collection of data to assist in the development of distribution center and capital budgets.
Assist in the design, selection and installation of packaging material handling equipment incorporated into existing, new and expanded distribution centers.
Work effectively with external resources (consultants and contractors) to ensure collaborative partnerships to meet business requirements.
Bachelor of Science in Packaging Engineering or equivalent engineering discipline
3+ years of packaging experience in a distribution/logistics environment
Experience in a highly automated warehouse environment
Solid technical understanding of packaging materials and processes.
In-depth knowledge of corrugated, paperboard and various media for product protection.
Familiarity with package testing and standards.
Expertise in projects related to process design, work measurement, productivity improvement, cost reduction and project implementation
Experience in best methods development
Experience performing cost analysis for project justification
Strong ability to gather, analyze and interpret information and develop, recommend and implement solutions while maintaining budget
Excellent planning, organization, and problem solving skills
Excellent PC skills MS Suite
Effective communication skills; demonstrated ability to interact across a broad range of organizational levels and functions
Excellent interpersonal skills
Ability to work independently with little or no direct supervision
25% Travel on an Annual Basis
Must be flexible with schedule and able to work overtime in a fast-paced environment
