This location is Abbott's only manufacturing plant that makes its Zone Perfect and Glucerna nutrition bars, with 180 million bars produced annually. The Industrial Engineer provides plant manufacturing with engineering support in the areas of line speed calculations and reporting, throughput evaluation, headcount justification, capacity analysis, and downtime evaluation. In addition, the Industrial Engineer identifies opportunities for cost reductions or efficiency improvements in all areas of the plant. The role will work onsite at our Fairfield, California manufacturing plant, and will report directly to the Operations Manager.

  • Drive Continuous Improvement through application of tools and leads and/or oversee Continuous improvement projects

  • Function as a Lean and Six Sigma practitioner and coach

  • Recognize changes in the environment and present resources as indicators of future problems and opportunities; prepares for such eventualities (Example: Initiate plan to acquire new engineering skills required by changes in technology.)

  • Execute the design of products/processes/equipment/systems/facilities by applying standard engineering theories, concepts, and techniques within the discipline

  • Investigate, conduct tests or experiments, gather data, and perform preliminary analysis. Report findings and prepare and communicate recommendations and respective action plans.

  • Coach and mentor on problem solving tools, which includes Root Cause Analysis, Focus Problem Solving, A3, and Lean Six Sigma DMAIC

  • Predict patterns/trends. Grasp complexities and sees relationships among data; determine consequences and alternatives; make recommendations (Example: Develop a process improvement for manufacturing; analyzes problems from multiple perspectives.)

  • Improve methods/designs/processes. Recognize and implement good ideas/innovations/costs reductions; consistently generate/adopt original solutions to problems and reduces them to practices (Example: Implement better methods to reduce component costs; creatively apply others' design ideas.)

  • Build internal capability by teaching, coaching, training, and mentoring others by sharing technical expertise and providing feedback and guidance

  • Communicate with inter-organizational and outside customer contacts on routine matters

  • Develop proposals, conduct reviews; provide audience targeted content; prepare project summaries and design documentation. Obtain approval to proceed with proposed action plans.

  • Participate in team meetings; serve as a functional expert in design reviews

  • Initiate and cultivate open, honest relationships with colleagues, customers, contractors, and vendors by establishing rapport, developing an understanding of others' needs, promoting common goals, and following through on commitments (Example: Offer assistance; interact effectively with stakeholders at appropriate levels of the organization.)

  • Identify full range of customer/client needs and propose solutions to address them; make alterations in products or services to better meet (recognized or unrecognized) customer need (Example: Partner with an outside vendor to provide a better deliverable.)

  • Comply with all regulations and standards for quality, Environmental, Health, Safety, and Energy (EHS&E) Global Policies, Abbott Engineering Standards, and other governance areas as applicable

  • Identify areas of risk with respect to compliance

  • Facilitate and drive OEE Improvement Team

  • Oversee Continuous Improvement Productivity Projects and helps develop pipeline projects

  • Drive annual Value Stream mapping to maintain a strong productivity pipeline

  • Lead, plan, and conduct assigned projects within engineering specialty requiring conventional types of plans, investigations, and/or equipment

  • Review plans and monitors status of implementation for those assigned to project; makes judgments regarding quality of implementation within discipline; employ contingency plans to recover from schedule slippage and financial overruns when appropriate (Example: Track actual expenditures compared to projected cash flow for own project.)

  • Facilitate the definition of each project's scope with clients

  • Estimate and coordinate resources needed (materials, budget, time and people) to accomplish assigned individual tasks (Example: Coordinate work with technicians and associate engineers; prepare contingency plans and budget for assignments.)

  • Participate in economic analysis and feasibility studies related to project alternatives. Jointly responsible for achieving the project's financial targets in support of business objectives.

  • Coordinate with technical support personnel to conduct prototype or experimental runs of products or processes

  • Direct the efforts of others such as technicians and outside resources

  • Perform tasks such as writing Requests for Capital Expenditures (RCEs), safety/quality checklists, scope documents, etc.

  • Develop and execute validation protocols

  • Resolve problems, such as production process deviations, vendor deviations from specification, urgent out-of-stock replacements, and crisis situations requiring fast, astute decisions with rapid implementation by utilizing technical training and experience

  • Provide training on systems

  • A Bachelor's Degree in Industrial Engineering, science, or closely related discipline

  • 2 or more years of significant engineering and/or operational experience


  • Experience with the full suite of Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Teams, and Word, etc.)

  • Has awareness of the potential consequences (defects and failure modes) of design changes to established processes

  • Able to apply scientific knowledge, engineering knowledge, mathematics, and ingenuity to complete assignments related to a specific technical field or discipline

  • Lean and Six Sigma certifications

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

Working under limited supervision, monitors building system operations and performance. Completes maintenance and repair records as required.</p><p>Reviews assigned work orders. Estimates time and materials needed to complete repair. Orders necessary materials and supplies to complete all tasks.</p><p>Maintains an energy management program to ensure measures are taken to operate all systems in the most efficient manner to keep operating costs at a minimum.</p><p>Maintains the building lighting system, including element and ballast repairs or replacements.</p><p>Performs welding, carpentry, furniture assembly and locksmith tasks as needed.</p><p>Responds quickly to emergency situations, summoning additional assistance as needed.</p><p>Performs other duties as assigned.</p><p>SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES</p><p>No formal supervisory responsibilities in this position.
