This is a skilled position that performs electrical installation, repairs, troubleshooting, and preventive maintenance on electrical equipment and control systems in an industrial utility plant environment with multiple critical processes. Work is performed under the direct supervision of the Instrument and Controls Supervisor.

  • Installs, repairs, and maintains electrical services in utility treatment plants, wellfields, buildings, lift stations, variable frequency drives (VFD), motor controls, etc.

  • Repairs, installs, maintains, and calibrates of all types of electrical equipment including 3 phase and 480 volts and instrumentation.

  • Installs, repairs, and maintains electrical outlets, lights, conduit, fuse boxes, etc. Maintains emergency power systems. (ATS and Generators)

  • Installs, repairs, rebuilds, and maintains electrical equipment including motors, motor starters, relays, pressure switches, circuit breakers, VFDs and controllers.

  • Directly responsible for and must conform to electrical and mechanical maintenance standards and departmental policies and procedures.

  • Performs routine preventive maintenance regarding operational instrumentation and equipment at the utility treatment plants, lift stations, and maintains appropriate records.

  • Assists in other maintenance operations when needed.

  • Maintains cleanliness of work area.

  • Works on call on a rotating schedule or as needed.

  • Performs other related work as required.

  • Knowledge of the National Electric Code and standard methods, materials, tools, codes, and practices of the electrical trade. Knowledge of the occupational hazards and applicable safety precautions of the electrical trade.

  • Able to troubleshoot/repair problems in complex electrical systems and VFD setup/programming.

  • Able to plan, layout and perform electrical work of average difficulty.

  • Ability to work from sketches, blueprints, and schematics.

  • Able to use computer for record keeping activities and equipment setup/diagnosis.

  • Able to analyze problems and reach conclusions using independent judgment.

  • Able to work independently with minimal supervision and as a team.

  • Able to coordinate activities of peers and to report to supervisor.

  • Able to express oneself clearly and concisely, orally and in writing.

  • Knowledge of the operation of hand and power tools required by assigned work.

  • Knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions of the trade, including establishing safe work zones.

  • Knowledge of National Electrical Code.

  • Knowledge of standard practices and application of materials and tools of the electrical trades.

  • Skilled in diagnosing equipment malfunctions.

  • Skilled in the use of standard office computer equipment and software applications.

  • Skilled in the use of small office equipment, including copy machines or multi-line telephone systems.

  • Ability to work outside regular hours in inclement weather and adverse conditions, as necessary.

  • Ability to maintain adequate inventories of parts and components.

  • Ability to maintain accurate records including computer data entry.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public, co-workers, supervisors, and outside agencies.

  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions (and other written materials) communicated in English.

  • Ability to distinguish colors.

  • Ability to climb and descend equipment, ladders, steps, etc.; ability to work at heights of 60 + feet.

Education and Experience:

  • High School Diploma from an accredited high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma is preferred.

  • Five (5) years of experience in electrical field or two years post graduate formal/vocational education plus three years trade experience.

  • One year of electrician experience with industrial equipment and controllers is required.  

(A comparable amount of training, education and/or experience may be substituted for the above qualifications.)

Licenses and Certifications:

  •     Must possess and maintain valid Florida Driver's License

  •     Journeyman's license (electrical) is preferred.
